What have you been doing since you graduated from DSU?

I have a job at SARP [a subsidiary of Veolia, a French environmental management company], and I keep swimming. I have a double project: a job and swimming, which takes a lot of time, but I do enjoy what I am doing. On top of that, I am my own manager so I have been managing my publicity and interviews for my swimming career. I am constantly looking for sponsors and financial support for my swimming. Most importantly, though, I am super proud to say that I qualified for the 2024 Paris Olympic Games!

How did DSU prepare you for what you're doing now?

School in France and at DSU wasn't the same at all. I studied in France before I went to DSU. I came to DSU because I could study in the U.S. and swim. In three years I completed an undergraduate degree and an MBA at Delta State. One example of how DSU influenced me is that DSU taught me to do group projects. I think America is a less "selfish" country than my own country so it helps to work in a different way. Of course, I use English a lot now so I took that with me as well. And marketing, finance, management... there are a lot of things I still use today in my professional career at SARP.

What’s a favorite DSU memory?

It is really hard to pick one so here are a few.

  • My first drive from the airport to DSU: Coach Dan'l [Murray] was talking the whole drive to make me feel comfortable, but I was super tired because of jet lag. My English was super bad then, and I was a bit shy so it was a total disaster. During that drive, I probably understood 5% of what he said! But I'm sure he does remember that moment!
  • My first time in Walmart with Shelby [Cox], a hometown girl was the same. It was terrible because I couldn't express what I wanted to buy. It was hard, but it is a funny memory!
  • My first Thanksgiving and Christmas swim meets at DSU: Mrs. Missey [Hudson] came to cheer us at every competition we had at DSU. She works at the International Student Services office. She is such a sweetheart and helped me so much, as well as trying to make every international student feel at home.

Advice to Delta State's international students

Just enjoy your time at DSU. I first found it a bit too green over there and in the middle of nowhere since I was coming from a big city. But once you're there, you understand that it is a big family. I'm super thankful for my time spent at DSU, and I brought back so many great memories! I do miss it a lot, and I'm hoping to come visit after the Olympics. And for anyone reading this, please follow me on social media (my IG : caaroj and LinkedIn : Caroline Jouisse). I need your support for my journey to the Olympics! Cheers and Go Okra, always and forever 💚💚
