Pop-Ups in the Parks: Community Read Launch and Book Pick-Up at our Little Free Libraries

We are excited to announce the launch of our first Community Read!

The Community Read is a book club for the entire community. Our Office of Equity and Inclusion (OEI) partnered with James Madison Regional Library (JMRL) to highlight books that focus on inclusive storytelling. Different books will be selected throughout the year to read and discuss together to uplift the stories of groups within our population that often get left out of the main narrative we tell about this place. The books will be available to borrow through the County’s Little Free Libraries (LFLs) as well as through the JMRL branches.

For the first Community Read book, we honor the Monacan Indian Nation who occupied this territory before European arrival. With their permission, together we will read The Monacan Indians: Our Story – an indigenous history of the nation written by its citizens.

Community members will also have the incredible opportunity to listen to book co-author, Diane Shields, as well as other Monacan citizens, discuss this book during our Community Read event titled “What is an Indigenous History?” where you can learn more about why this book has been so crucial for the Monacan people, and why it is a history we should all know.

What is a Little Free Library?

Little Free Library is a nonprofit that builds community, inspires readers, and expands book access for all through a global network of volunteer-led little libraries. The Albemarle County Little Free Libraries seek to â€śequip and inspire” our community, both adults and youth, to learn how to imagine more inclusive and equitable worlds.

Where are the County LFLs?

You can find Albemarle County Little Free Libraries in the following parks: Chris Greene, Preddy Creek, Darden Towe, Mint Springs, Walnut Creek, Charlotte Humphris, and Simpson Park.

Can Anyone Use a Little Free Library?

Yes, anyone may contribute or take books. The more the merrier! If you take a book (or two) from a library, you do not need to return that exact book. However, to keep the little library full of good choices for the whole community, the next time you swing by the library bring a few books to share. Little Free Library book exchanges function on the honor system; everyone contributes to ensure there are always quality books inside. This way, we all win! (From littlefreelibrary.org)
