Civil Discourse in Idaho

What is civil discourse? It’s not just about being polite. Civil discourse means engaging in conversations on topics that are important to us, sharing our views and listening to others’ views in honest and productive ways. Our individual civic literacy reflects our ability to stay informed, understand government processes at various levels and know the rights and responsibilities we all have as citizens.

Idaho Public Television is committed to showcasing state and national efforts to break down political and social polarization and promote civil dialogue and civic literacy in the Gem State. Check out resources we've assembled.

Preserving Democracy: Educational Materials

Students learn about the pursuit of democracy from the Revolutionary War through recurring cycles of civil rights progress and backlash, the January 6, 2021 Capitol riot and beyond.

Using video and supporting educational materials, students explore the impact of extreme partisanship, white nationalism, social media, voter rights, and the importance of a civics curriculum on engaged and informed citizens.

Community Engagement

In August, IdahoPTV Education attended the STEM Day at the Western Idaho Fair, back for the first year since 2019! We joined 14 other organizations to present a day of STEM learning for kids.

We ended the month with two special community events, Spirit of Boise Balloon Classic Kid’s Day and Whitney Elementary Block Party, where our community education specialist, Trisha Mick, met more than 1,000 parents and kids in the Boise area!

In September the IdahoPTV Education team will be attending the National Education Telecommunications Association (NETA) conference in North Carolina to learn from and connect with PBS member stations from across the nation on educational outreach and initiatives.

September 20 is National Voter Registration Day

Research shows that having clear conversations about the voting process with children makes them more likely to vote when they’re adults. Here are nine books to start conversations around voting.

Snakes: September Science Trek

Who knew these legless, cold-blooded creatures could be so fascinating?

Each month, Science Trek explores a different topic, with short videos available on the Science Trek website, YouTube, and LearningMedia. The Science Trek website has facts, games, links and lesson plans correlated to Idaho and national science standards.
