Adopt an adult ʻīlio (dog) or an adult pōpoki (cat) into your ohana for $0!

Through the month of March, cats and dogs 6 months and older can be adopted for $0, with dog adoption fees generously sponsored by a member of MHS' Board of Directors.

Our kennels are completely FULL and we desperately need to make space for incoming animals. As the only open-admission shelter on Maui, our doors must remain open for sick pets, injured pets, and victims of abuse or neglect.

Dogs and cats are spayed/neutered, up-to-date on vaccinations, and microchipped. Adoption also includes license and county fees (for dogs) and a free starter pack with supplies and toys. View our amazing pets at mauihumanesociety.org/adopt and head over to our shelter today, open at 11 a.m.!

Pet of The Week: Pitufina!

Aloha Kakou, my name is Pitufina and I am Maui Humane Society's Pet of the Week! I am a survivor of the tragic Lahaina fires. I no longer have a home to go back to, so now I am in search of a new home to call my own. When I first came to the shelter, I was shy and scared, but with time, I've blossomed into my true self! Now, I can't get enough of gentle pets and I love to rub up on you to show my affection. Playing with toys is one of my favorite pastimes – there's just something about batting around a toy that brings me joy. I've had a rough few months, but I'm resilient and ready to embrace the love and care of a new family. If you're looking for a sweet and playful companion to brighten your days, I'm your girl!

Brighten Your Days With Pitufina!

Ho'omau: Fire Survivor to Playful Kitten!

Many of you might remember this little survivor from our posts back in August. Ho'omau came to Maui Humane Society on August 15th, 1 week after the tragic Lahaina Fires. He was found with severe burns to his face & paws. But through his pain and suffering, he remained playful and affectionate as ever. We named him Ho'omau which means to persevere in Hawaiian. We hoped that his resilience could bring much some needed hope and lift the spirits of our community.

Ho'omau spent some time in a foster home to continue healing before being made available for adoption. His social media appearance is where he would capture the hearts of his future family. And they wasted no time! As soon as Ho'omau was cleared to be adopted, Kevin came to pick this baby boy up and take him home for PTA (Paws To Adopt). A week later, Ho'omau was officially adopted into their Ohana! We recently got an update:

"He’s been my best buddy since the day I brought him home. He is very active – typical kitten getting into everything, as you can see in the Christmas tree photo. Always needs to see what we are doing on the computer, too.

He gets 3 meals a day, but if he ever wants a Churu snack he let’s us know it! He’s a healthy 10 pounds and still growing! His burns on his legs have all healed and are covered with hair, but I don’t think his ears will ever be covered in hair, the burn scars seem permanent. But they don’t hurt because he loves ear rubs!

He loves his toys! I’m going to teach him to play ‘fetch’!

Thanks to everyone at MHS for taking such good care of him so he can live a healthy and happy life!"

We are so happy to see Ho'omau living such a happy life! Seeing from where he started to where he is now, gives us hope for all of our Lahaina survivors and for our community.

(KHON2 News) Wags ‘n Whiskers: Become Oreo’s ohana

HONOLULU (KHON2) — A sweet ohana is all Oreo is looking for. Sitting at only a year and a half years old, Oreo is looking to find his furever home.

Maui Humane Society says Oreo is timid. But while the world may have not been kind to Oreo, he is learning some spaces can be safe with the friends he’s made at the shelter.

Oreo is getting to experience so many new things, his favorite being balls!

Any type of ball — tennis balls, kong balls, squeaky balls — will completely captivate fun-loving Oreo.

Thanks to the patience, love and kindness MHS staff and volunteers have shown Oreo, he has transformed into a calmer pup.

An ohana with the same patience, love and kindness is all Oreo is truly looking for.

Oreo even has a Goodpup Scholarship that goes with him when adopted.

The scholarship provides Oreo and his new ohana with virtual 1 on 1 training that will help him learn how to be the best pup he can be.

MHS' fire cats still need your help! We have just over 50 outdoor community fire cats in our care who are seeking new homes through our Operation Fire Cat Placement Program (OFCPP). All you need to do is open your heart and your outdoor space, and MHS will cover all expenses during the acclimation period.

Through OFCPP, MHS' Fire Cat Specialists build a beautiful catio on the caretaker's property to house 2-3 outdoor fire cats. The caretaker will then feed, care for, and monitor the cats over a 3-4 week acclimation period before releasing them. These cats can no longer return to their home in Lahaina, so by participating in this program, you are providing them a new, safe environment they can call home. We have placed 60 cats so far with this program, and we need your help in placing the rest!
