Bargaining for Academic Assistants

The 2010-01 Collective Agreement for Academic Assistants expires August 31, 2023

BARGAINING COMMITTEE

It's time to negotiate a better Collective Agreement!

We will deliver notice to bargain to the Employer in June 2023, 90 days before the expiration of the Collective Agreement, in accordance with the Labour Relations Act.

We are now looking for a Bargaining Committee of 2 members (plus the AA Unit Chair), to join this Team. Bargaining Committee members will be elected. The role of the bargaining committee is to negotiate the best possible collective agreement that reflects the priorities of the membership.

NOMINATIONS

Please email your nomination(s), or self-nomination to: contact@usw2010.ca.

Nominations OPEN Monday, April 3, 2023 at 9:00am

Nominations CLOSE Thursday, April 6, 2023 at 5:00pm

ELECTIONS

Once all nominees have been vetted for eligibility and have accepted their nomination, election biographies will be sent by email for review by the Membership.

The election will take place April 11 - 13, 2023 and will be conducted electronically, which should allow our members access to the process regardless of schedule/location (e.g. working remotely, vacation, etc.).

The election will START:

Tuesday, April 11, 2023 at 9:00 a.m.

The election will FINISH:

Thursday, April 13, 2023 at 5:00 p.m.

Details regarding the vote results will be sent by email to all members on April 14, 2023.

COMMITTEE RESPONSIBILITIES

Responsibilities will include:

  • Survey of the membership regarding bargaining issues;
  • Development, review and revision of bargaining proposals;
  • Ensure members' priorities and concerns are reflected in the proposals;
  • Attend negotiations as a key part of the union team;
  • Decide which proposals to withdraw, which ones to revise and which ones to retain during negotiations;
  • Recommend acceptance or rejection of a tentative agreement and explain to the membership how their priorities and concerns are reflected in the settlement.

Time Commitment

Most, but not all, of this work will be carried out during normal working hours. Local 2010-01 will request release-time for elected members and ensure that there is no loss of pay. Some hours outside of normal work time will be required, especially during intensive bargaining periods

(any overtime hours will not be compensated).

Experience

We anticipate that most people will not have prior experience in the process of bargaining a collective agreement. Based on this, Local 2010-01 will train those who are elected to the committee.

Bargaining Committee Composition

There will be 2 positions plus the AA Unit Chair on the Bargaining Committee to represent members of the bargaining unit. Additional committee members will include the President (Chair and Co-Chief Spokesperson), Vice-President (Co-Chief Spokesperson), Assistant(s), and USW Staff Representative.

The election will establish the 2 committee positions held by bargaining unit members.

Eligibility for Election

To be eligible for election to the Bargaining Committee, members must be in 'good standing', meaning they must be dues-paying members of the Local 2010-01 bargaining unit (Academic Assistants).

Bargaining is Better when we do it Together!

Consider serving on this important Committee!

There is no better place to make your voice heard than at the Bargaining table.
