Description:
Many children are referred to play therapy to assist in their adjustment to divorce. They may feel vulnerable, overwhelmed and confused by their emotions as well as the family dynamics. Providing a safe space and engaging activities may assist the child’s process and help them express their thoughts and feelings. This training will highlight current theory and research on children of divorce, and present play therapy techniques to guide children through the complications of divorce. Play therapy interventions presented may be used in individual therapy sessions, as well as children’s support groups. Videos of client sessions will illustrate techniques, and experiential activities will augment the learning process.
Objectives:
- State at least three risk factors that make it more difficult for a child to adjust to parental divorce.
- Describe at least two play therapy techniques to assess children of divorce.
- Identify at least five play therapy techniques to help children cope with children of divorce.
