Holy Week at St. Philip's

Maundy Thursday Invitation to the Table: Share, See, Sense, & Experience

UPDATED: Maundy Thursday Service Bulletin, March 28, 2024

Maundy Thursday

Agape Meal, March 28th at 6PM

At 6:00 p.m. we will gather and fellowship, as Jesus and the Disciples did, in the Ruth E. Little Parish Hall for an Agape Meal and to remember Christ and his disciples at their Last Supper.

Maundy Thursday Service, at 7PM

We gather in the sanctuary and fix our attention on the agony in the garden of Gethsemane and the journey to the cross and crucifixion. We will participate in foot washing and hand washing and Holy Eucharist.

The altar, symbolic of Christ, is stripped of its vesture, washed with vinegar and left bare for the solemnity of Good Friday. The ceremony of washing the altar with wine or vinegar was intended as homage offered to Jesus in return for his humbly washing the feet of his disciples and the bitter wine he received at the crucifixion.

Tenebrae services generally occur between Wed. and Friday of Holy Week. the Service marks Jesus journey to Golgotha and allows for extended meditation through proclamation of the Word in scripture and sermon, as well through music, increasing darkness, and silent reflection. The Great Easter Vigil with Holy Baptism and Eucharist Service Bulletin, March 30, 2024

Holy Saturday; The Great Easter Vigil and Holy Baptism with Eucharist

Saturday. March 30th at 7:30pm

The Great Vigil of Easter is the most significant liturgy of the Christian year and is the culmination of the Triduum—the Sacred Three Days. The service begins in total darkness. The Sanctuary is slowly illuminated by the candles of the faithful as we observe the Paschal Mystery—the passage from darkness into light, from death into life—told through ancient texts, scriptural readings, and sacred music, telling of God’s saving actions through history.
