Out and About With Scout and Archie

These Are a Few Of My Favorite Things

I just love May and June in NYC! Scout, Archie and I can be found sitting on the stoop for hours. The cool mornings with a light breeze off the Hudson, make for an exceptional experience exploring downtown NYC.

This month, instead of all the new things coming to the neighborhoods, I wanted to showcase of few of my favorite places to visit - especially on these glorious days in May and June. I hope you enjoy my list - if you have not, go explore these great establishments!

Neighborhood Buzz

La Bonbonniere

La Bonbonniere is a Village safe haven from all things hollandaise. The cash-only menu is filled with standard breakfast staples, without any meddling whatsoever. Eggs. Omelets. French toast. Pancakes. Muffins. Bottomless cups of pretty mediocre coffee. Like we said, breakfast, not brunch.

That isn’t meant to suggest that this diner is a dump. Although, it kind of is. But the food speaks for itself and is good enough to attract crowds - weekend lines here are the norm, not the exception. Instead of giving your number to a hostess (there is none) and her calling you back when your table is ready (this place has a pay phone on the wall), BonBon has the eloquent system of making you stand in the cramped dining room while you wait your turn. Spend that time browsing the randomly hung photos and magazine clippings. Aside from a lot of Molly Shannon and Machu Picchu, we dare you to figure out the theme of Bon’s decor.

St Luke's In The Fields Garden

Welcome to one of the most distinctive and admired gardens in New York City, comprising more than two-thirds of an acre of walks, lawns, and a fine collection of garden standards, rare hybrids and native American flora.

The gardens’ southwest orientation and heat-retaining brick walls create a warm micro-climate, allowing a wide variety of flora and fauna to thrive. This green space, with its abundance of berries and flowers, provides a small but important way-station for migrating birds and butterflies during the spring and fall seasons. Over 100 species of birds and 24 types of moths and butterflies have been recorded.

Sanpanino Sandwich

Sanpanino was founded in 2000 by Leonardo Scarpone, a hybrid sandwich shop that combines New York's nostalgia for Italy's Salmeria with the vibrant Paninoteca found during a trip to Italy. Puglia's parents Brooklyn Inspired by his mother, a seasoned cook, and entrepreneur, he opened a shop to showcase the best aspects of Italian and Italian sandwiches and cooking. It was made. combine. "San" is the prefix for "sandwich". The name Sanpanino was born because it literally means sandwich in Italian. Fresh mozzarella cheese is homemade daily, roasted in-house, and prosciutto and copper are imported from Italy. Fragrant basil and all ingredients arrive fresh every day.

Black Stone Coffee Roasters

Don't take my word for it even though I a here almost every day - take a look at what their reviews have to say:

The nicest family runs this business. Hazelnut iced coffee is my go-to every day, but I frequently get smoothies and wraps and everything is absolutely delicious. Service is incredibly efficient, everyone who works there is so friendly and kind, and they take pride in taking care of their customers.

Couldn't ask for a better spot in the neighborhood, and couldn't recommend this place more to locals and out-of-towners alike.

This place never disappoints in both food and service. All of the food is fresh and delicious daily with a plentiful selection of muffins, croissants and other breakfast foods. The same goes for the lunch selections! Sammy and his sons Alex and Ray, along with the staff, make the visit well worth it and ensure my return!

Cursive Home

Cursive is a delightful treasure trove of gifts, stationery, jewelry, home decor and whimsical goods, with wonderful window displays and clever, humorous signs. Established in 2005 by Michael Schultz and Douglas Duncan, first with a shop within the beautiful ABC Carpet & Home followed by a shop inside Grand Central Terminal in June of 2008. Unfortunately, both of those shops closed in March 2020.

By the end of 2020 Michael and Douglas opened a new store in the West Village, the success of which led them to open a second shop a short walk away, Cursive Home, with a focus on homeware opened a year later, in 2021

The Corner Bistro

Natives line up nightly for the chance to scarf a burger and raise a pint in what is, essentially, a classic dive bar. With scuffed brick walls, wooden booths in the cramped back room, visible dust in the corners, a jovial bartender, and — most important! — cheap booze and food, it’s like a throwback to a pre–Sex and the City New York City. And the nine-ounce, plump, buttery burgers are deservedly famous. The entire menu of the no-frills place fits on a tiny chalkboard, and everything is served on crimped paper plates; don’t expect utensils. The food comes speedily, and you can linger over your beer, hobnobbing with the brokers, bohos, and slumming richies who populate the neighborhood. And you’d be hard-pressed to spend more than $25 — now this is NYC.
