Greetings paddlers,
Wow, it's already April! Spring has arrived, and everyone is gearing up for another great paddling season. Plans are taking shape for races, social events, summer camps, work parties, and community partnership events â along with our ongoing boathouse rehabilitation efforts.
Your participation is crucial to the success of our individual and collective efforts as a Club. As we return to a more normal season, we want to keep everyone informed and connected. To achieve this, we will be sending out Currents newsletter more frequently this year. You can expect to receive it in May, July, September, and November. Additionally, valuable information is posted almost daily on the private WCC member's Facebook page. Make sure to check out đ Our Instagram đ
If you would like to be involved in any aspect of the production of this newsletter or have content to share, please contact us. There are so many great stories at the Club, and we look forward to sharing yours!

SATURDAY, APRIL 22, 2023
7:30 AM â 12:30 PM
The Washington Canoe Club is hosting the 17th annual Kumuâohu Challenge on the Potomac! This is the season-opening race of the East Coast Outrigger Racing Association (ECORA) sanctioned OC1/OC2 points series and is part of the Mid-Atlantic SUP racing season.
In addition to outrigger and SUP, classes will include surfski, sea kayak, and ICF sprint canoe/kayak. Come celebrate the spring thaw with a great day of paddling and camaraderie in the Nation's Capital!
The racecourse is on the relatively protected water of the Potomac River, beginning and ending in front of the Washington Canoe Club on the beautiful Georgetown waterfront. The OC1/OC2, surfski, and sea kayak course will be ~15 km, while the SUP and sprint canoe/kayak course will be ~8 km. Both races will be run concurrently.
More detailed information and registration information are on PaddleGuru.
Volunteers are essential for the success of this race. We have a range of tasks available (for both racers and non-racers). If you can help out, sign up.
Registration closes at midnight Wednesday 4/20/2023. There will be NO RACE DAY REGISTRATION so register now if you plan to race.
Parking on Saturday between 7 am and 3 pm will be limited to assigned race volunteers only. The WCC parking area will be prioritized for volunteers and for craft loading and unloading. Volunteers will be at the NPS gate to control entry, direct parking, and help with loading and unloading race craft.

|
|
The Kumuâohu Challenge Race raffles and auctions have traditionally been very successful in raising much-needed funds for our Club. The funds raised go towards supporting our youth canoe and kayak sprint teams, providing the menâs and womenâs outrigger teams with the necessary equipment to compete, and towards community outreach efforts. We welcome groups from the D.C. community to learn about the Club, proper paddling techniques, and to share in the joy of paddling.

Spring Cleanup and Commodoreâs Cruise
Date TBD
SPRING CLEANUP WORK PARTY
Come and help get the club ready for the season. Just show up with your work clothes and a "can-do" attitude. There will be tasks for every level of effort.
COMMODOREâS CRUISE BOAT CHECK
MANDATORY for all members storing boats/boards.
If you have a boat or SUP at the club, you or your representative must come to the club and show that your boat or board is "river-worthy" so we're not storing derelict or abandoned craft in precious and limited rack space.
On the morning of the cruise, you'll check in with Tim (Commodore) or Stephen (Vice-Commodore) or the other volunteers who will be there to verify you have claimed your craft. If a boat/board has not been checked out during the cruise, it may lose its rack space. At a later date (and as per club rules) we will move any unclaimed boats to temporary storage to give their owners a chance to come and claim them. After a to-be-determined period of time, any boats that are still not claimed will be considered abandoned and disposed of.
The Club will contact all members via email with the Date and time of the Commodore Cruise.

WCC Monday Rec Night Returns (May 1)
OC6 | Kayak | SUP
Starting Monday, May 1
New Start Time 6:30
NEW! This year, Rec Nights will be expanded to include expert instruction and advice on SUP and Sprint Kayak, in addition to the OC6!
|
|
Every Monday night (starting May 1), Coach Joe Cafferata, along with Jay Gopal and Doug Brooks, will take groups out in the six-person outrigger canoes (OC6) and teach basic paddle strokes, and timing. Stephen Weiss will be available to work with kayakers, and Trish Riggs will be there to work with SUP paddlers.
The goal is to help members who want to improve their skills with any craft they aspire to, and provide opportunities for those who want to try paddling different boats.
|
|
|
Rec Night will also start at 6:30 pm to alleviate congestion at the dock.
The club has paddles and PFDs for the OC6's. Club SUPs and kayaks are first come first served. Bring water, sunscreen, a hat, and some food or drink to share if you want to partake in the traditional potluck and socialize after the paddle.
There is a rec OC-6 email list and Google sign-up sheet. To be added to the list and get the link to the sign-up sheet, email Joe at josephlrc@yahoo.com. Please sign up ahead of time rather than just showing up so Joe can plan accordingly.

Meet the new WCC Social Committee
It has been more than two years since Lisa Ramm resigned from her post as WCC Entertainment Chair, a position she held for six years. Since then, we have been searching for another unicorn to fill her shoes. In the meantime, a group of enthusiastic volunteers has come together with the same goal of hosting social events that bring our members together and strengthen the bond within our community.
|
|
Following the January Oyster Roast, the WCC Board approved the formation of a "Social committeeâ to take on the tasks of the Entertainment Chair. It's worth noting that WCC Entertainment events have always been self-supporting and break-even, which is distinct from our various fundraising events.
The current Social Committee members include Mo Fathelbab, Jay Gopal*, Grace Hong*, Carmela Leith, Patricia Linderman, Helen Quick, Trish Riggs*, Kevin Rooney*, Vicki Sliwa, Gloria Vestal*, and Suzanne Zweizig (*board members). The committee meets monthly via Zoom to brainstorm event ideas and assign roles.
|
|
The duties of WCC Entertainment Chair from the WCC by-laws:
- Plan and provide a robust calendar of inclusive Club sponsored entertainment events
- Receive and manage requests for member events; present to Board for approval and for Secretary to include in the complete Club Calendar
- Provide guidance and assistance for events at the Club as needed

The WCC History Book is Still Available
|
|
Images of America: Washington Canoe Club, by WCC lifetime honorary member Chris Brown, is still available for purchase (and all proceeds from the sale will go to the boathouse restoration fund). Or donate $250 or more to the restoration fund and receive a complimentary signed copy.
Head over to our history page and watch Chris Brown's Virtual Book Talk that was given via Zoom on December 3, 2020.

Attend a WCC Board Meeting
The WCC Board of Governors would like to extend an invitation to all members to attend one of our quarterly in-person board meetings.
Two spots are available for guests at each meeting. If you are interested in WCC governance or have a topic to discuss, this is your chance to do so.
The remaining in-person meetings for 2023 are April 4, July 3, and October 2.
Contact WCC VP Jim Ross to schedule attendance and get the location (private residence).
|
|
Suggestions & Feedback for the WCC Board
A new virtual (and physical) suggestion box has been set up so you can let the Board know what can be improved, what youâd like to see more of, or anything else thatâs on your mind.
Virtual suggestions go to a dedicated feedback list and not the entire board.

Spring Refreshment
Here's a seasonal refresher for all members on locking up the club.
A morning crew has noticed that the boathouse has been left unlocked a few times recently. So it seems like the perfect time to remind everyone that regardless of the time of day or night, if you are the last person to leave the club, it is your responsibility to lock up. Unlike the pedestrian gate, the front door does not lock automatically. It must be locked from the outside with the key. Conveniently, itâs the same key that unlocks the NPS vehicle gate under the aqueduct bridge.
Hereâs a checklist for locking up:
- Roll in the awnings and close the table umbrellas (also a good idea during high winds)
- Put away any club gear accidentally left out such as pfds or paddles
- Close all boat bay doors. Use the poles to secure the bay doors so they remain shut keeping the bigger critters out (see photo)
- Make sure both fridge anti-raccoon latches are closed
- Turn off all lights inside the boathouse and make sure outdoor lights are off or unplugged
- Lock the front door (see above)
- All gates should be closed and locked
- If you are on the water and you return to find yourself locked out of the boathouse, there is a spare key stashed for emergencies. You should have been given that location at your orientation. If you donât know the location, ask a WCC friend or contact membership@washingtoncanoeclub.org to get it.
All club rules and by-laws can be found on the website.

The 2023 Racing Season Begins

Calling all women athletes! Wanna compete with the outrigger team?
ï»żYouâve all seen the big canoes on the dock, but have you ever wondered what it would be like to race in one? Perhaps youâve joined the recreational group on Mondays but would like to take the next step. The WCC Womenâs Outrigger team is seeking athletes with a desire to compete. While no experience is necessary, a willingness to learn and work hard as part of a team is. If interested, contact Lisa Ramm (lrramm@gmail.com) and Rachel Shackelford (rachelpualani@gmail.com).
The womens team practices are Sunday mornings and Tuesday and Thursday evenings.

|
In the wake of Women's History Month, we want to give a shout-out to all the inspiring women from WCC who competed on land and sea yesterday! Congratulations to you all!
If you know of a WCC member who should get a shout-out let us know.

Show Your Club Spirit and Look Good Doing It!
|
|
Any item can be customized with your name.
The WCC Squad Locker stores have a wide variety of club-branded items for members of all ages (including infants and toddlers). All items allow for personalization through the ordering process. With embroidered items, you can put your name (or mantra) on the sleeve. If an item has a printed logo, you can get your name (or nickname) on the back or sleeve. Hats are personalized on the back band area. Both shops are periodically updated and changed, so keep checking back. If thereâs something you would like to see offered, let us know.
Thanks to Bonnie Havens for all her hard work on the stores.
