Karl Scott's
Stewardship Sunday Message
|
|
The following is a transcript of Karl Scott's Stewardship Sunday message from October 10th.
|
|
Good morning. I’m Karl Scott the Finance Chair for the Heart of Longmont.
I’ve been informed that as of Tuesday we have received a total of $8670.00 in donations to be used for the Restoration of the Miracle Window. This gets us off to a very good start in covering the costs.
Raise your hand if you feel blessed that you have this Heart of Longmont Church. We are able to share in God’s blessings for us, to better learn how to disciple and share our blessings with others.
When you arrived here today did you remind the others in the car to lock the doors before coming into the service this morning? WHY? It is harvest season you know. If you didn’t - you might find some of these in your car when you leave. Why you ask, would anyone put veggies in my car. The answer is simple “It’s Harvest time”. When you have more than you can use, you share with your neighbors, friends, co-workers and those that do not have what you have a bounty of. Be it squash, cucumbers, tomatoes, my favorite Zucchini! The same works in our support of our church. BUT! It’s not just out of our bounty that we share, it is out of our desire to keep Gods work alive in our neighborhood.
When we were youngsters and children (which I’m thinking might have been just two days ago) our parents and members of the church at that time made sure that the church remained here for us to learn the spiritual path, to a life with God as our spiritual leader and guide. We learned those lessons and have supported the church moving forward to provide that same opportunity to the youth in our time here. What they will name the new generation will remain to be seen but it is our stewardship that keeps this amazing opportunity here for the young that are needing the chance, the opportunity to come and learn of God’s grace and goodness for everyone. In that way they can carry on the leadership and support for the next generations to come.
On October 18th we will email or snail mail a Stewardship Letter and Pledge Card. This is not a legal binding contract but your best estimate of your contribution for the year 2022 in support of the ongoing costs of the operation our church. We are setting November 15th as the date to get the responses back so the finance committee can review and get the budget ready for the Church Charge Conference, December 4th.
You do make all the difference in the opportunity to be a part of “BUILDING FOR THE FUTURE”.
That my friends starts here and starts now.
Thank you.

Cristina Watler McCoy, 70, received an emergency packet after yet another Hurricane devastated the region of Nicaragua in 2020 where she lives.
“The food packet is a help, but what will help me more is the cane,” she said. “I was using a stick and have fallen twice. Now, thanks to God and you, I have this cane that will serve me for many years, and I won’t have to go around holding on to someone or worrying about a fall.”
This aid packet was provided by United Methodist Women emergency fund in partnership with Accion Medica Cristiana, or Christian Medical Action. This Nicaraguan, faith-based nonprofit organization has partnered with UMW since 2005 to improve the livelihoods of women and their families in remote parts of the country. The work by this partnership continues today to support sustainable agriculture, microlending groups, child protection, clean water and health care. This is but one example of how our local UMW unit’s Mission Giving helps.
Thanks to all the HOL members who helped us raise our Mission Giving funds by working in the September Garage Sale.

Skip came to Longmont right after seminary and served as our associate pastor and youth minister. Skip sends a special invitation to those who were a part of his youth group.

Bonnie Manion and her husband, Bill, moved to Longmont and began attending church in 1959. Bonnie grew up in Longmont. Bill was from Goodland, KS and he & Bonnie met at the Methodist church in Fort Morgan. Bonnie was teaching there and she noticed the “good looking guy” in the choir. They were married at Rinn Methodist Church out in the country and their children were baptized at Rinn. They then decided that they wanted to start attending the church in town. Bonnie taught kindergarten and lst grade at multiple schools in Longmont. (Spangler, Indian Peaks, Central, Niwot and Lincoln Elementary schools).
Bill & Bonnie lived in two houses in Longmont, One at 1517 Kimbark and the one she still lives in today at 1230 Bross St. They have two daughters, Marka & Becky. Marka lives in Seattle and Becky lives in North Platte, NE. Both girls grew up in Longmont. They attended Sunday School and were very involved in the youth group. Becky enjoyed singing in the choir.
Bonnie taught Sunday School at the church and continues to be involved in United Methodist Women. Rev. Rice’s wife’s influenced Bonnie to join UMW. Bill was the Sunday School Superintendent in the 60’s and served as the chair for the scholarship committee. They were in a young couples group with David & Mary Ann Waddell, Retha Goodson and Chuck & Charlotte Houston.
Bonnie remembers many of the ministers that have passed through our doors, but was particularly fond of the Grooters, Barry & Barbara Kimbrough and Pastor David Burt.

October Compassion Offering
|
|
October's compassion offering is the Boulder United Methodist Mission Partners (BUMMP). BUMMP is a partnership formed in 1976 of more than 16 Boulder-area United Methodist Churches (of which Heart of Longmont is one), which organizes and promotes mission projects at local, regional, national and international locations. BUMMP provides a variety of hands-on mission opportunities on a continuing basis that can most easily be done by combining volunteers and support from more than one church as an inter-church supplement to individual church mission projects.
Recent activities have included BUCKHORN United Methodist Camp Clean Up and Repair, CAL-WOOD Restoration following the 2020 Cal-Wood fire developing erosion control barriers, reseeding grasses, planting trees, rebuilding bridges and picnic benches, rebuilding trails, and more!
If you wish to donate to this month's compassion offering, you can do so online by clicking here and navigating to the Monthly Compassion Offering tile. Or, you may send a check to the church office with "Compassion Offering" on the memo line.

In Memory of Barbara Lewis
|
|
It is with sadness that we share with you that long-time member Barbara Lewis passed away on Monday, Sept. 20, at age 95. She passed peacefully with her family around her. Per her wishes there will not be a memorial service. Please keep her family in your prayers.
Barbara specifically asked that any memorials be sent to the Heart of Longmont, for the Stained Glass Restoration Project.

MASKS REQUIRED
FOR IN-PERSON WORSHIP
|
|
The recent emergence of the SARS-CoV-2 virus Delta variant in parts of Colorado has highlighted that there may be times when changing patterns of COVID-19 transmission or severity warrant enhanced infection control measures to ensure congregational safety. I think we have entered such a time. While Boulder County continues to remain in the “Clear” category, health officials are recommending that masks be worn while indoors, even for fully vaccinated people.
As reported August 13 in the Longmont Times-Call:
"As delta variant cases surge throughout Boulder County and the nation, public health officials on Friday updated their guidance to recommend everyone 2 years and older wear masks indoors regardless of coronavirus vaccination status.
The CDC recommends that all individuals, including vaccinated individuals, wear a mask indoors in public in counties with substantial or high transmission.
Boulder County Public Health spokesperson Angela Simental said Friday afternoon that Boulder County was still classified in the substantial transmission category, according to CDC data. However, by Friday evening, it had moved into high transmission." (Emphasis added.)
While it saddens me to have to share this news, I believe that we need to watch out for each other and for our neighbors. I have notified our church Trustees and our Re-Open Team that I will recommend we move back to wearing masks while in the sanctuary on Sundays. That will also mean a suspension of coffee hour after worship for now.
It has been a long time since March 15, 2020 and we are still not out of the woods yet with COVID. But I want you to be safe and well and I want others to be cared for by us. So let’s do what we can TOGETHER to get through this TOGETHER. May God continue to hold us close.
~Rev. David Burt
