Changes at the Heart of Longmont
|
|
by Brad Schol
If one thing is certain, it is that changes occur in our lives and the same goes for the Heart of Longmont. During this year we will greet new members and sadly say goodbye to members who have moved away or gone on to join the saints. Staff members are coming and going, program changes are happening, and a change of church governance is under discussion.
Late last year Reverend David Burt announced his retirement and his last Sunday leading worship at the Heart of Longmont will be June 26th. Our newly appointed pastor Reverend Claire McNulty Drewes will begin her leadership at Heart of Longmont on July 10th. These changes will be challenging and emotional as we say farewell to Reverend David with sadness but send our best wishes with him and Rebecca in their much-deserved retirement. It with much cheer and anticipation that we greet Reverend Claire to Heart of Longmont. As a local resident Claire is very familiar with Longmont and will be a tremendous leader for Heart of Longmont as we strive to carry out our mission in the community.
Children’s and Family Ministry is now supported by a corps of volunteers who are making Sunday’s Kids worship and activities meaningful. Watch for news about Vacation Bible School to be held in July and a Saturday reading program now starting for kids.
Additional praise sing and special music have been added to our worship services thanks to the efforts of Dan Chakin and Karen MacIntosh. Music will continue to be a central aspect of our worship at Heart of Longmont with additional special music upcoming.
In 2020 the Staff Parish Relations Committee and Church Council voted to add a staff position of Ministry Assistant to support vital ministry areas, develop small groups and create focus around community mission work. That position had gone unfilled until now and a recruitment is underway for that job. Any person interested in the position can contact the church office to get a copy of the job announcement which includes instructions on how to apply for the job.
A working group of the Church Council has begun studying a simplified governance structure for Heart of Longmont to evaluate the church’s operational/administrative structure and look for opportunities to be more efficient in supporting the church’s missional goals .

Another Round of Chef Hearty
|
|
For the last time this school year HOL filled Chef Hearty totes for the Wild Plum families.
On May 9th church volunteers shopped for ingredients then measured and bagged fresh and healthy ingredients for a Spring Super Salad.
Chef Hearty is a mission event that is available to anyone who wishes to participate. If you missed helping this year, no worries. The event will return in the fall with the start of the new school year. Hopes are high to continue this activity and maybe even offer a cooking class for families. How much fun would that be?
Try this delicious salad for yourself.

In 2021 an organizational model for church leadership was brought to the attention of Church Council. The Simplified or Single Board Governance model has been implemented in many Methodist churches over the years. The model is appealing to both large and small congregations that struggle with finding and matching effective leadership with the mission of every United Methodist church, namely: “To make followers of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.”
The Simplified Governance model offers a more efficient, flexible, and timely decision-making organizational structure that makes more effective use of church leadership by streamlining the management functions between committees/work teams/church council and giving them more time to focus on the mission of the church, all the while meeting Book of Discipline requirements for the functions of the church. By doing so, the model better facilitates an environment that makes church leadership better matched and accountable for missional focus.
Church Council has formed a Simplified Governance Model working group that has been meeting since December 2021 to explore and assess Simplified Governance Model. The working group consists of Marty Allison, Jeff Brown, Pastor David, Rod Edmonds, Tricia Grafelman, Paul Johnston, Jamie Bowland, Clint Schahrer, Brad Schol and Karl Scott. Numerous resources are available and are being used. The current objective of the working group is to determine if there is sufficient justification for implementing Simplified Governance that would result in a recommendation to Church Council to go forward. The next step after that would be to present the recommendation at Church Conference and request a vote of approval from the church congregation to go forward with implementation. More information will be shared with the congregation as the working group learns more about Simplified Governance Model.
Participation in the working group is open to any member of the congregation and all are welcome to attend. Questions are encouraged and can be directed to Jeff Brown, Pastor David, or Rod Edmonds.

WILD PLUM TEACHER APPRECIATION
|
|
|
|
On May 2 Heart of Longmont showed the Wild Plum teachers some love with breakfast goodies. The teachers enthusiastically enjoyed tasty breakfast burritos, fresh fruit and coffee.
A little gift of flower seeds with a special note was also given to the hard working staff.
Another one of the ways the Heart is putting more of God’s love into the world.

A Way To Welcome Our New Pastor
|
|
Coming into a new church as the pastor is daunting enough. Just imagine facing a sea of unfamiliar faces in church pews! It’s a challenge to remember the name of that new person you just met, but imagine if there are 60, 70, or 80 new people and names to try to remember.
A bit overwhelming, don’t you think?
Here are ways you can help Reverend Claire McNulty-Drewes learn your name:
Wear your name tag when attending the church service.
Update your profile in our online directory with a picture of yourself.
Follow these steps to add your photo to the HOL directory.
2. Take a photo of yourself or have someone take it for you on your phone or computer. Save the image in your photos.
3. Click on "people".
4. Type in your name; click on your name.
5. Click on the profile image.
6. Click “upload image” .
7. Click the location where your photo is saved.
8. When the photo pops up click “use”.
9. Crop the photo if needed.
10. Set the photo as your profile.
11. Done.
For help call the church office, 303-776-3523. Thank you for helping our new pastor get to know everyone.

Many people found our sermon series on “Questions I’d like to Ask Jesus” helpful. We took the first three months of this year to respond to questions people had. After a short break to focus on Lent and Easter, we return to our series by examining some questions submitted that we hadn’t had time to address earlier.
For the next few Sundays we will look at questions that came from several people surrounding the concept of ‘the Kingdom of God.’ Jesus speaks a lot about the kingdom of God in the gospels. What was he talking about? Is this Kingdom happening now? Soon? In some far-off future? How does this Kingdom come about? Who are ‘in’ this Reign of God?
Join us Sundays at 10:00 live in the sanctuary or on YouTube as we explore the questions you have.

Because the Longs Peak Chorus is using online tickets only through Eventbrite for our spring concert, I have not been waving tickets in front of you. But I am reaching out again to encourage you to purchase your tickets online soon.
See the show flyer above with full information. The Chorus is preparing a great show, Storm Front is always outstanding, and I am sure that the "5130" from Erie High School will be great as well.
Let me know if there is any help I can give, and I hope to see you at one of the shows on May 14.
