Generating Energy From Our Ocean's Currents
When Gabriel Alsenas briefs Florida legislators on how much energy the Gulf Stream holds, he asks them to visualize it: “Imagine all the major freshwater rivers in the world, like the Amazon and the Mississippi, and their discharge into the world’s oceans. Multiply that water flow by 30, and you get what’s going by our shores every second.” Every. Second.

Harmful Algal Bloom Exposed in Humans
A newly developed method for detecting toxins in human urine established by a researcher from FAU's Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute brings new insight. This test can detect even low-dose human exposure to toxins, which helps the study of the long-term health impacts of harmful algal blooms, especially the low-level concentrations from human inhalation.
These findings are the first to report toxins produced by freshwater concentrations directly from exposed residents impacted by bacteria in both fresh and salt water ecosystems in southern Florida.

Teaching the Youth
In a continuous study, researchers noticed the levels of teens sexting is increasing despite preventive efforts by educators or parental figures. Now, Sameer Hinduja, Ph.D., professor in FAU’s College for Design and Social Inquiry, and co-director of the Cyberbullying Research Center reports it is time to teach teens "safe" sexting.
The intent behind Hinduja's 10 point message is for teens to learn discretion, empowerment and wisdom in the world of media.

Warmest Welcome
Kenneth Salleng, DVM, recently joined the Comparative Medicine team as the director veterinary care.
Salleng brings a wealth of experience in clinical veterinary medicine, with a large variety of species, laboratory animal pathology, and as a research administrator. His roles at FAU will include managing the veterinary medical, clinical diagnostic, surgical, treatment and pathology services within the university’s animal care and use program.

New Clinical Research Unit Director
Ximena Levy
, MD, MPH, is now the director for the FAU Clinical Research Unit (CRU) Core. As director, she will oversee the CRU, including the scientific, regulatory, operational and financial processes of the unit. She will also work to ensure that FAU research investigators and staff have the training, resources and support needed to conduct high-quality, collaborative, innovative clinical and translational research.
