April 2024

April is National Volunteer Month, a time to recognize and celebrate the selfless contributions of individuals who dedicate their time and efforts to supporting causes they believe in.

Here at Hillsborough Education Foundation, volunteers are vital to our mission. Their dedication and passion play a pivotal role in our ability to empower students, educators, and families across Hillsborough County. Whether it's through mentoring, assisting with fundraising events, or lending a helping hand in our programs, volunteers are instrumental in helping us fulfill our vision of providing every student with the opportunity to succeed.

As we reflect on the importance of volunteers this month, I want to extend my deepest gratitude to each and every one of you who generously give your time, talents, and treasure to support HEF. Your contributions truly make a difference, and we are incredibly grateful for your continued support.

Anna Corman Named New President & CEO of Hillsborough Education Foundation

Hillsborough Education Foundation is excited to announce Anna Corman as its new President & Chief Executive Officer (CEO), effective immediately. Following an extensive search by HEF’s Board of Directors and an external recruitment firm, which involved evaluating a slate of highly qualified candidates, Anna emerged as the unanimous choice. Having served as Interim CEO since September 2023, Anna brings not only a wealth of experience but also a profound commitment to education and community service to her new role.

Anna Corman first joined Hillsborough Education Foundation in 2017 and has since demonstrated remarkable leadership and dedication. Rising through the ranks, she was appointed as the Chief Program Officer in 2021, where she played a pivotal role in advancing HEF's mission and programs.

Chris Taylor, Chair of the HEF Board of Directors, praised Anna's leadership and experience, stating, "Anna's tenure at HEF highlights her exceptional leadership abilities, while her genuine passion for education and tireless dedication to our community unequivocally position her as the right candidate to guide this organization into the future."

Advocating for Public Education: The Millage Referendum

On April 2nd, 2024, the School Board of Hillsborough County took a decisive step by approving the placement of a millage referendum on the November 5th ballot. This pivotal decision marks what could be a transformative moment for our public education system.

The millage referendum is a modest property tax that would cost the typical homeowner just 75 cents a day (or $281 annually), and in return, would provide a $6,000 supplement for teachers and school leaders, and a $3,000 supplement for support staff such as bus drivers and school counselors.

Hillsborough County has seen an exodus of educational talent in recent years, leading to the current situation where over 400 teacher vacancies exist, leaving more than 10,000 students without the educators they sorely need. Neighboring counties, like Pasco, Pinellas, and Manatee, have a millage in place, providing them with the resources to keep educator salaries competitive and more in line with the cost of living.

Getting the school board’s vote was a critical first step on the journey toward ensuring that every student has access to quality education, that every family has confidence in their children’s schools, and that educators and support staff feel valued and supported in their roles. Thank you to the School Board of Hillsborough County for their leadership on this matter.

HEF is committed to keeping the public informed, but in the meantime, check out these key voting dates. And make sure you’re registered to vote.
