Dear Friend of the SC Bar Foundation,

As the South Carolina Bar Foundation prepares for the end of the fiscal year, it is also preparing for a change in leadership. After more than seven amazing and wonderful years as the Executive Director of the SC Bar Foundation, I am stepping down. It was not an easy decision by any means because not only is it an incredible organization that supports so many worthy non-profits, but personally, coming to work never felt like work. The Board and the staff of the SC Bar Foundation are the very best and never fail to give their time, talent, and treasure. I am just so honored to have had the chance to work with them to build the SC Bar Foundation and expand its grant-making and fundraising throughout the state. I have had opportunities to establish lifetime friendships with so many of you over the years, and I will be forever grateful for your support of the SC Bar Foundation and me. This is definitely not a goodbye, but rather see you later because I am not going far. I am starting a new role at the University of South Carolina School of Law, and I am excited to work with you in that capacity.

During my tenure at the SC Bar Foundation, we have rebranded, including a new website and updated our mission and vision statements. We have established the highest levels of support we have ever experienced which has allowed for funds to be spread to an increased amount of law-related organizations throughout the state. We began hosting events, which continue to be expanded to numerous areas around South Carolina because we want to come to you. I cannot take credit for the rise in interest rates, but the impact is almost beyond measure. When I started, we were grateful to receive over $1m in IOLTA. This year, we will have earned over $4m! In 2016, the SC Bar Foundation only had 374 donors totaling $94,468 in donations. Now that number has increased to 743 donors and doubled donations to $188,947! The incomes of IOLTA revenue and donations have allowed us to increase our funding to 40 grantees who span the entire state of South Carolina. We have been careful in our fiscal responsibility to ensure at least 84 cents of every dollar goes to support our grantees efforts to provide legal assistance to so many South Carolinians. Navigating the changes that were required to see these improvements has been nothing short of an unbelievably rewarding experience.

When I started as Executive Director, I used to refer to it as “your Foundation” but it is OUR Foundation, and it is critical that we continue to support its great work now and in the future. I hope you will join me in donating today through one of the following ways:

  • Recognizing your friends and family with a gift in their memory or in honor.

  • Checking something off your to-do list by turning your donation into a recurring gift- weekly, monthly, quarterly, or annually. You set the amount and frequency, and we will do the rest.

  • Donating stock or life insurance to ensure you make a lasting impact.

  • Ensuring a justice legacy by including the SC Bar Foundation in your will or estate plan. If you are 70 ½ or older, you can make tax-free gifts directly from your IRA.

  • Donating annually.

  • Making a pledge and paying monthly, weekly, quarterly or at the end of the year.

  • Telling your colleagues what influences you to support the SC Bar Foundation.

  • Attending Cocktails in the Courtyard - Rock Hill and or Charleston this fall.

I’m so grateful for the honor to have served as the SC Bar Foundation’s Executive Director, and I am so grateful for your support of the SC Bar Foundation and your work to better the lives of all South Carolinians. If you need more information, contact the SC Bar Foundation or visit scbarfoundation.org.

Best wishes and warmest regards,

Megan Sweeney Seiner

ONGOING CHALLENGE

$20 IN '23

This year's goal of the SC Bar Foundation is to increase the percentage of participation of the SC Bar members. On average only 2% of practicing attorneys donate every year. So for 2023, we are challenging 2,023 SC Bar members to donate a least $20 before the end of the year. As of May 22nd, we have had 376 donors participate, so we need 1,647 more donors to reach that goal!

Collectively we will raise $40,460 to ensure legal access, aid, and education for every SC citizen. That’s a big impact for a small donation, don’t you think?

If you're up for the challenge, here are ways you can submit your $20 donation:

I'LL DONATE $20 TODAY!

A NOTE FROM OUR

Secretary/Treasurer

JOHN ROXON

"I have been a practicing attorney for over 35 years. I know it is difficult to allocate hours and dollars to promote access to the law, perform pro bono work or otherwise reach out to those who may need help but do not know where to turn. The South Carolina Bar Foundation provides a simple solution for us all to contribute to improve our communities, and our society in general, which really is part of our obligation for the privilege of doing what we do."
