Importance of knowing the local emergency contacts

Hello Carolina,

If we are trained on what to do in case of an emergency, then we are able to make choices that can protect our lives and that lives of those around us. There are simple things you can teach your children to keep them safe, starting by teaching them about emergency contacts and steps one must take take in case of an emergency.

Teaching children how to react in case of an emergency is crucial for their safety. Here are some tips to teach kids how to react in an emergency:

  • Explain what an emergency is:

Children need to understand what constitutes an emergency so they know when to react. Explain to them that an emergency is a serious situation that requires immediate action.

  • Teach them how to call for help:

Make sure your child knows how to dial emergency services like 911 or the local emergency number. Teach them how to say their name, their location, and the nature of the emergency.

  • Discuss emergency procedures:

Explain to your child what they should do in case of different types of emergencies such as a fire, earthquake, severe weather or abuse. Review the emergency procedures regularly so that they remember what to do.

  • Identify emergency contacts:

Make sure your child knows who their emergency contacts are and how to reach them. Provide your child with a list of emergency contacts, including their names and phone numbers.
