July Cultural Arts eNews

Summer is in full swing for the Cultural Arts office. The TGIF Concerts in the Parks series is underway and it's fun to see the community gathering to picnic, socialize with friends and neighbors and enjoy some great live music. We'd especially like to thank our first-ever TGIF Concert Series sponsors, The Carlsbad Charitable Foundation and Rincon Homes. Our talented arts education team is hosting two weeks of sold-out summer arts camps in July, where kids from 9 to 14 will "be the artist" with hands-on visual and performing arts experiences. Speaking of visual arts, our next gallery exhibit, Fiber in 3D, will open in mid-July. The exhibit will feature works by more than 15 established and emerging fiber artists, showcasing their techniques in a variety of fiber mediums. As the long summer days stretch out and the weather gets warm, we invite you to join us and share all the arts has to offer this summer.

Georgina Cole Library

1250 Carlsbad Village Drive

On view in the Pop-Up Art exhibit at Cole Library are two large-scale serigraph works by regional historic artist Corita Kent of Los Angeles. Corita Kent (1918-1986) was an artist, educator, advocate for social justice and a firm believer in the power of love, hope and compassion. Working in printmaking methods such as silkscreen and lithography, her bright printed compositions featured bold text layered with abstract forms, conveying the principles she embodied in her work and life. Between these layers, she skillfully integrated philosophy, literature, street signage, scripture and song lyrics that spoke to the heart of human existence.

"I see things in terms of illumination. There’s a certain territory that’s been illuminated and a vast territory that’s in the dark. And looking at that edge is what I’m interested in.”

-Corita Kent
