NEWSLETTER: January 2024

WELCOME TO 2024!

Happy new year! We could not be more excited to welcome 2024 because we believe it will be a very big year for the Tulsa Day Center and our efforts to provide better services to those facing homelessness.

One of the most exciting additions will be a kennel. One of the main reasons people decline shelter is because animals aren't allowed and leaving their dog behind isn't an option. We hope to change that by giving people a safe spot for their pet while they can come inside to shower, sleep or warm up.

We expect to serve more people (and dogs!) in 2024 than ever, and while this isn't good news, we are well-equipped with a growing staff of dedicated people.

If you want to be a part of this work, we always need volunteers and donors to partner with us each day. We simply couldn't not do what we do without YOU.

WINTER IS HERE

Every year the cold weather seems to hit in an instant. For most of us this doesn't present any major challenges, but to many in Tulsa, it can be a life or death situation. The Tulsa Day Center is here to help people through these cold months by providing winter clothing, utility assistance and shelter from the elements. Our clothing room (pictured above) is in desperate need of men's winter clothing.

How you can help:

  • Donate outdoor gear like cold-rated sleeping bags, dark-colored tarps, towels and hot hands for individuals who choose to stay outdoors.
  • We especially need men's and women's underwear (new only!) as well as men's coats, gloves, walking shoes, pants and socks.
  • Drop off donations any day from 8 am to 5 pm at 415 W. Archer in downtown Tulsa. Please go to the back of our building and ring the doorbell or call 918-583-5588; we will unload your donation for you! Please do not give items directly to individuals in our parking lot or leave bags on the sidewalk.
  • If you encounter someone needing help, the best thing you can do is reach out to the Housing Solutions Outreach Team at 918-322-9922. They are equipped to get people into available shelters.
  • Make a donation at tulsadaycenter.org/donate or text DAYCENTER to 44321.

Ongoing Needs:

  • Bath towels, hand towels and washcloths
  • Twin sheets and XL twin sheets
  • Backpacks and small duffle bags
  • Packaged snacks (Jell-O cups, granola bars, peanut butter crackers)

FACES OF HOPE

Welcome home, Gertie!

We see faces of hope every day at the Day Center, and recently hope showed up in the faces of mom and daughter, Gertie Sr. and Gertie Jr. After leaving their home abruptly due to violence, they were forced to leave behind their car and service dogs. With the help of the Day Center's Rapid Rehousing program, they were able to secure new housing, connect with other service agencies and feel a sense of calm again. In the words of Gertie Jr, "I'm just so glad I'm able to take care of my mama again like I used to."

SCHEDULE A TOUR

If you've ever wondered what the work of the Day Center looks like up close, we would love to show you! In our experience, once people come through the doors, they "get it." Set up a time for Development Director Monica Martin to tell you the Day Center's story and introduce you to some of our very special clients.
