Right Path to Better Health
Ms. K is a 55 year old woman, who prior to entering the shelter was residing in an abandoned building, involved in an abusive relationship, and dependent on opiates.
Within the first month of the entering shelter, Ms. K overdosed three times and the shelter staff had to administer Narcan and/or contact EMS. It was apparent that her life was dependent upon a successful intervention.
After repeated engagement and encouragement, Ms. K enrolled in Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) offered through NSO’s 360 Neighborhood Wellness Center. After enrolling in primary care and substance abuse treatment, Ms. K expressed an interest in enrolling in community mental health treatment to address past traumas and relationship issues which had significantly contributed to her history of substance use.
Ms. K’s health, appearance, and demeanor had dramatically changed from when she first arrived at the shelter. She slowly began talking and visiting with family members from whom she had been estranged.
In late December, she was welcomed back into her family’s home. She continues to receive primary care, substance abuse, and mental health services via NSO using telehealth which she has learned to use on her phone.
Thanks to the amazing staff at NSO Ms. K is on the right path to better health.

BLKHLTH and NSO Partnership - 2nd Year!
NSO is excited to join BLKHLTH and Cottonelle for a 2nd year as an DownThereCare Ambassador for the GoodDownThere colorectal cancer awareness campaign!
The campaign’s goal is to help decrease barriers to care, increase resources, destigmatize the conversation, and encourage African American/Black people to get screened. There are great racial disparities in colorectal cancer cases and deaths for African American/Black people. However, these cases and deaths can be prevented if people get screened early enough. NSO, BLKHLTH, and Cottonelle hope that through education and access to screenings we will save lives.
As a Good Down There Ambassador, NSO will work with community partners to distributing screening kits and educational materials. Kit distribution will focus on African American/Black people, 45 years of age or older.
Each kit includes a complimentary Fecal Immunochemical Test (FIT) which tests human hemoglobin (blood) in the stool. A positive result can indicate a colorectal cancer or polyp that needs to be removed. Addressing a positive result early is essential to minimize the chances of a bad health outcome in the future.
THE FIT TEST
Neither Cottonelle nor BLKHLTH are formally affiliated with Pinnacle BioLabs. The Fecal Immunochemical Test, or FIT tests human hemoglobin (blood) in the stool. A positive result can indicate a colorectal cancer or polyp that needs to be removed. Addressing a positive result early is essential to minimize the chances of a bad health outcome in the future.

Coming up
There will be more information forthcoming on how to receive a free kit. Please follow us on social media for upcoming colorectal screening events.

Doug E. Fresh Films Colonoscopy PSA At Hospital Following Kangol Kid's Colon Cancer Death
U.T.F.O. member Kangol Kid also lost his life to colon cancer in December 2021, just 10 months after his diagnosis. On Saturday (March 26), fellow Hip Hop trailblazer Doug E. Fresh shared an Instagram public service announcement from a hospital where he was getting a colonoscopy.
“I just got up from a colonoscopy,” he said in the clip. “You can hear the sound in the back. This is the bag. It was a 20 minute situation. I’m telling you, you need to get this done. They may find polyps and stuff like that, which are little things on your colon. You need this. I gotta cut this off because they told me not to have my phone on, but I want you to see me and see what’s going on.
“It’s a little IV, they give you some propofol. That stuff is, like, crazy. I didn’t even know I went to sleep and I’m back. So I’m cutting this off, but I wanted to let y’all know about the whole procedure. Men, you need to do this. Listen to me. Get yourself checked.”
He wrote in the caption, “This is for my brother #kangolkid and all those who passed from this horrible disease. We have to be proactive about our health. To all my brothers out there, let’s do a better job of caring for ourselves. #colonoscopy #prevention.”
