SALE HIGHLIGHT

LOT #251

Rare BG-74 Grateful Dead Poster

This is one of the rarest, most sought-after, and most expensive posters of the entire Bill Graham series. The central image of this poster is comprised of two photographs by Herb Greene—one of Jefferson Airplane, and the other of the Grateful Dead. James H. Gardner, the artist who created this poster, expertly crafted the Roller alphabet for the lettering. It is unknown exactly what happened to the posters for this show. One theory is that they were seized by Canadian Customs pursuant to a requirement that advertising material such as this had to be printed in Canada. A similar problem occurred when Russ Gibb tried to bring posters for a Toronto concert into Canada from Michigan. Perhaps these posters and cards were destroyed, or perhaps to this day they are sitting in a large warehouse similar to the final scene of the movie, Raiders of the Lost Ark.

Estimate $12,500-$20,000

LOT #1

Rare 1968 Cardboard Judy Collins Seattle Poster

This exceptional rarity is listed in Split Fountain Hieroglyphics as Plate Number SFH221 and was created by John Moehring. The show featured Judy Collins and was held at the Seattle Center Arena on February 3, 1968. Moehring created this poster in late 1967 as can be seen by his artist credit in the lower right. This image was printed using the split fountain technique and it is stunning! We know of only three and possibly a fourth example of this rarity. Fans of Pacific Northwest posters should take note—another is unlikely to be offered anytime soon.

Estimate $750-$1,250

LOT #187

Scarce Original AOR 3.49 The Yardbirds Poster

This colorful poster is listed in The Art of Rock as Plate Number 3.49. Jim Salzer produced this event, which saw The Yardbirds, Moby Grape, and Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band take the stage at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium on July 22, 1967. Like most of the Jim Salzer pieces, this has been reprinted at least three times. Fortunately, Salzer changed the color on the reprints so they are quite easy to tell from an original poster, such as the one offered here. These were printed on thin stock and fell apart easily, making one this nice tough to find.

Estimate $1,750-$3,000

LOT #185

Killer Signed BG-105 Serigraph Poster

Designed by Rick Griffin for a series of February 1968 shows by Jimi Hendrix, Albert King, and John Mayall, the BG-105 “Flying Eyeball” is perhaps the most iconic and recognizable poster of the sixties. Because of the popularity of this image, it was reprinted, and also produced in a large serigraph version as offered here. A run of 500 pieces was produced and all legitimate pieces are signed and numbered. In our opinion, this serigraph is the ultimate way to own this image. When framed, it will take command of the room it is in!

Estimate $1,750-$3,000
