Winter Weather

K - 5 students will have daily outdoor recess except in extreme weather conditions such as rain or severe cold/windchill. It is expected that students dress appropriately for outside recess and weather conditions.

Aspen’s cold weather policy is:

● If the “Real Feel” temperature falls below -5 degrees, the students will not go outside for recess.

● If it is raining, the students will not go outside for recess.

● Decisions for indoor or outdoor recess are made by 10:00am. Aspen Academy uses the KARE 11 website for the official temperature reading.

● In the event of a noticeable weather change during the recess schedule, there may be a decision made to have inside or outside recess later in scheduled time.

● If an event or weather conditions create unsafe playground equipment, students will not go outside for recess.

Please consider these factors related to weather as students leave home each morning.

Hats, scarves, boots, snow pants, mittens and gloves are necessary.

Most playground games are played in the snow. If students do not have boots on, they are restricted to play on the cement areas. Students are not permitted to stay indoors during lunch or second recess time without a written request from a physician.

If students are too ill to go outside, they are too ill to be at school.

Please reference out student handbook: Aspen Student Handbook

SECURITY / SAFETY

Over the summer, Aspen Academy had a new security system installed.

When you come into the building, you will need to push the doorbell on the wall in the vestibule to let the office know who you are and why you are here.

They will unlock the door and let you in. At that time one person at a time may proceed to the office window to check in, to pick up or drop off a child, or check in as a visitor.

While there may be more steps to get into the building, be reassured that this is all to further the safety for our scholars.

Reminder: For safety- please only one person through the door at a time.

Parents MUST come into the building to sign in and out Scholars.

End of day student pick up:

Just a reminder all students not picked up after carline will be placed in Eagles' Nest.

$50 emergency fee plus $1 per minute.

Illness Reporting

If your child is absent due to illness, we ask that you share the symptoms or diagnosis such as influenza, strep throat, COVID, RSV, etc on the absence line. Aspen Academy does not supply facial masks, if you would like your student to wear a mask, families must supply their own.

This information helps us monitor and respond to illness trends we are seeing in our student population.

The information also helps us report trends to the Minnesota Department of Health who is monitoring statewide trends.
