AC Forum Hosts Inaugural Anticoagulation Stewardship Summit

25 key stakeholders met in Washington, D.C. to discuss the need for system-level improvements in thrombosis-related care

On June 7th, the Anticoagulation Forum convened patient advocates and key stakeholders from government agencies, health systems, and professional societies for the first-ever Anticoagulation Stewardship Summit. The Summit marks a pivotal first step toward establishing a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach for thrombosis-related care across care settings.

Participants heard from physicians, patients, government agencies, and health systems about the current state of anticoagulant management, ongoing stewardship efforts, successful stewardship programs in other disease states, and discussed a path for achieving anticoagulation stewardship nationally.

Thrombosis-related care is highly variable in the U.S. and preventable patient harm events are unacceptably common, but stewardship programs have demonstrated the ability to improve clinical outcomes and generate significant cost savings.

To continue the considerable momentum generated by the Summit, the AC Forum will lead an ongoing Coalition with key stakeholders focused on advancing national standards for anticoagulation stewardship programs nationwide.
