Board Member Spotlight: Jean Connors | |
Jean M. Connors, MD
Medical Director, Anticoagulation Management and Hemostatic Antithrombotic Stewardship Services
Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute
Professor of Medicine
Harvard Medical School
How did you become interested in the field of anticoagulation?
I became interested in blood when I first learned in middle school that I have a rare blood type (AB negative). Once I got to medical school, I really liked learning about all of the great coagulation proteins and platelets. Of course, the coagulation cascade was very appealing to me as it was taught as a nice orderly systematic series of enzyme reactions which was straight forward to learn—now I know that coagulation is messy with many aspects that contribute to forming a clot that we still don’t understand. For many situations and for the individual patient there are not always data to guide care—this is the decision-making aspect of treating patients with thrombosis that I like, it’s like extreme sports.
Do you have an ultimate career goal? (i.e., dream job, program/facility updates, etc.)
I am loving my current job.
Do you have any hobbies? If not, how do you like to spend your free time?
Sports—skiing, sailing, mountain biking, can no longer run, dog walking, and reading almost anything.
What is an interesting fact about yourself?
I have sailed all over the world.
| |
Do you have any pets?
Clara a goldendoodle (left) and Cooper a labradoodle (right)
What is your favorite family tradition?
Big Sunday brunches when we are all together that last a long time.
If you could meet any celebrity, who would it be and what would you do?
Too many people I would want to meet, however I would love to have Mick Jagger’s personal trainer as I am amazed that he can still dance the way he does at age 80.
Aside from necessities, what one thing could you not go a day without?
Coffee is a necessity, but it is the only thing that I can think of that I truly cannot go a day without. I travel with my own coffee.
Is there anything you wish would come back in fashion?
No, everything I can think of should stay out of fashion. Yoga pants are great.
What is the most daring thing you’ve done? (I.e., your craziest adventure)
I have had some great adventures sailing and skiing—crazy unexpected weather, exhilarating locations.
Anything else you’d like to share?
I am delighted to be working with the AC Forum to advance knowledge about anticoagulation. The board is comprised of terrific people with great ideas about bringing the latest knowledge to practitioners with excellent practice and implementation strategies, as this is what really matters. Knowledge is great but you need to get that knowledge applied to daily patient care—AC Forum excels at helping clinicians deliver the best anticoagulation care.

Did you know...
You can use Z-codes to document Social Determinants of Health (SDOH). Z-codes refer to factors influencing health status or reasons for contact with health services that are not classifiable elsewhere as diseases, injuries, or external causes.
Collecting SDOH data can improve equity in health care delivery and research by:
- Empowering providers to identify and address health disparities
- Supporting quality measurement
- Supporting planning and implementation of social needs interventions
- Identifying community and population needs
- Monitoring SDOH intervention effectiveness for patient outcomes
- Utilizing data to advocate for updating and creating new policies
