A Nod To Maud: The Legacy Of

ï»żLucy Maud Montgomery 

Take a journey back in time and visit the home of beloved Canadian author Lucy Maud Montgomery in Durham Region.


Best known for her novel, “Anne of Green Gables,” Montgomery once lived in the small village of Leaskdale, about 10 minutes outside Uxbridge.  


This year the Lucy Maud Montgomery Society of Ontario celebrates 150 years of the birth of Montgomery with a series of “Nod to Maud” events. 


Writer Erin Horrocks-Pope explores Montgomery’s successes and personal challenges as she visits the town and home where Montgomery spent 15 years raising her two sons and writing 11 of her 22 novels.

Local Business Highlights 

Experience field-to-fork produce and dining at Durham College. As part of its Farm Fresh Thursdays, visitors can enjoy freshly picked seasonal fare at the college’s farm. The options are as varied as the food: buy it at the Produce Pavilion, take home prepared foods from the Pantry retail store or enjoy a meal from a feature menu at the Bistro ‘67 patio. Farm Fresh Thursdays runs until October 22

Satisfy your sweet tooth at Biscuits to Baskets newest location. You might remember the home-based chocolate and bakery shop whose popularity soared earlier this year with a visit by influencer and food critic Keith Lee. In addition to their original location on Beatty Road in Ajax, you can now stock up on their chocolates, cakes and pastries at La Belle’s Garden Centre in Pickering. Open Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays. 

Food lovers will want to pay a visit to Market at 70 King in Oshawa. The 95-year-old heritage building at King Street East and Mary Street has been transformed into a food hall with seven diverse vendors and a cocktail bar. The space will also host pop-up vendors and community events. The Market is open Tuesdays to Sundays.  


Artist Sarah Shaw is celebrating 22 years of creating and cultivating art at Shaw Studios in Whitby. Sarah offers classes, workshops and children's camps to encourage the love of art among Durham residents. Learn more about Sarah Shaw.

Enjoy exceptional craft beverages, delicious food, and vibrant community spirit at the 2024 Scugog Beer & Cider Festival! The site of the former Sears store has been transformed into a roller rink complete with disco ball, lights and sound system. Skates and safety gear are available to rent. Take part in a live cooking demonstration with Chef Alex Page at The Sunflower Farm on August 18. From 1 to 3 p.m. stop by the Durham Tourism and Durham Farm Fresh tent for the demo and tasting of Chef Alex’s ‘Corn Risotto with Sunflower Seed Pesto.’ (Watch for that recipe in an upcoming newsletter!) Explore The Sunflower Farm market showcasing some talented vendors and their unique products; from handmade crafts and jewelry to locally sourced goods and delicious treats. 

Love classic cars and free entertainment? Don't miss Kars on King on August 23 from 3:30 to 9 p.m. More than 300 classic vehicles will line King Street and Simcoe Street in downtown Oshawa, accompanied by live music on the main stage at the four corners. Enjoy the family zone with jumping castles, face painting, balloons, and buskers. Grab some dinner downtown and stay for the event! Learn more about Kars on King.
