MOBILITY MONDAY

Message from Our Executive Director

June 1 marks the beginning of hurricane season, an annual occurrence familiar to all of us in Florida! National forecasters predict a very active year, with more named storms than last year. If you’ve lived in Florida for a while, you likely already have a plan for your family and property. If not, now is the time to prepare! Planning ahead will help reduce the stress and anxiety of an impending hurricane. Build an emergency supply kit and stay informed. Remember, don’t panic. Being prepared will help you navigate a hurricane. Your plan should cover the steps you need to take before, during, and after a hurricane. Ensure that everyone in your family and your friends are aware of the plan and understand their roles and responsibilities. Assemble an emergency kit with essential supplies to sustain you, your family, and your pets for three to five days. This kit should include water, non-perishable food, batteries, a phone charger, a flashlight, medications, and cash. Keeping informed is also crucial; weather forecasts and alerts will help you stay focused on the rain and wind events associated with a hurricane. I encourage you to fill up your vehicle with gas or fully charge it before the hurricane’s arrival. Our roadways will be ready prior to the hurricane, and many will be open within days after the storm. I am confident our partners at the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) District Four are prepared to address our local transportation needs during and after a storm. Year after year, FDOT has led the way in ensuring that roadways are open as soon as safely possible. Have a safe, healthy, and prepared hurricane season.

Sincerely,

Greg Stuart

Thriving Communities Program Project Kick Off

On Tuesday, May 14, the Broward MPO hosted the Thriving Communities Program Project Internal Kick-Off event. The meeting included our MPO staff, consultants from MHCP COLAB, Lauderhill Vice Mayor Lawrence “Jabbow” Martin, and the capacity-building team from WSP - Accelerator for America. We began with a roundtable discussion with our partners and the capacity-building team, focusing on the community's priorities in developing a vision and implementation strategies for transit-oriented development throughout Broward County. After the discussion, we took a tour to showcase some of the key corridors within the Thriving Communities study area, spanning from county line to county line between the Florida Turnpike and I-95. We are excited to continue this process and thank USDOT for the opportunity.

Essential Summer Safety Tips for Kids

The Broward MPO is prioritizing the safety of its youngest residents this summer. With schools out for the summer break starting June 10, many kids will be indulging in outdoor activities like walking, swimming, biking, and other fun endeavors. To ensure a safe and enjoyable break, the MPO has released a comprehensive list of safety tips. Visibility is key for young bikers and walkers. The MPO advises wearing bright-colored clothing and using lights or reflective gear, especially during early morning or late evening activities. Children are also encouraged to follow traffic signals and use designated crosswalks and paths. Swimming safety cannot be overemphasized.

The MPO reminds parents and guardians to ensure constant supervision around water bodies and to invest in swimming lessons for children who are not yet confident swimmers. Additionally, the use of life jackets in open water is strongly recommended. With the increase in outdoor activities, staying hydrated, applying sunscreen, and wearing protective gear during recreational sports are vital steps to prevent heat-related illnesses and injuries. The Broward MPO is committed to making this summer a memorable and safe experience for all children. The NHTSA provides invaluable resources for parents and young adventurers to learn more about safety precautions during these active months. Stay safe and make the most of your summer with these vital tips and resources.

What is the Safety Story For Your Community?

As part of the Route To 2050 Metropolitan Transportation Plan (MTP), the Broward MPO conducted a safety analysis of crash records throughout Broward County between 2017 and 2021. This data is now available as a story map on our Route to 2050 website: Analysis | Route to 2050 (arcgis.com).  The dataset reviewed includes over 300,000 crash records, nearly 1,000 of which were fatal and over 4,000 of which involved an incapacitating injury. The data was for major, off-system (or not federally funded) roadways in Broward, which is why you will not find information for I-95 or Florida’s Turnpike. The data shared on our story map is broken down by vulnerable users (bicyclists and pedestrians, motorcyclists, and aging road users) and by crash type (left turn and angle, rear end, and lane departure). A link to the entire report is provided along with additional resources if you want to take a deeper dive into the world of roadway safety. This crash analysis aims to develop a ranked list of crash “hot spots” that will be used to identify locations for safety studies and ultimately deliver cost-effective safety enhancements.
