MOBILITY MONDAY

Message from Our Deputy Executive Director

During the past year, the focus of my activities at the Broward MPO has been the Broward Regional Comprehensive Safety Action Plan (BSAP). The Broward MPO, in partnership with Broward County, received funding from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Safe Streets and Roads for All initiative to develop the BSAP. As we have investigated what causes crashes, an important concept has emerged. Speeding is a key factor in roadway safety and can increase the severity of a crash. The risk of death or serious injury increases as the speed of the vehicle increases. A pedestrian or bicyclist is less likely to survive a crash when the motor vehicle travels at a higher speed than a lower speed. Driving at a higher speed also increases the braking distance for a driver to react to potential distractions on the roadway.  According to The National Safety Council, “Excessive speeding reduces the amount of time the driver has to react in a dangerous situation to avoid a crash, increases vehicle stopping distance, and reduces the ability of road safety structures (such as guardrails, impact attenuators, crash cushions, median dividers, and concrete barriers) to protect vehicle occupants in a crash.” Speeding - Injury Facts (nsc.org). The BSAP is dedicated to improving outcomes for all drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists by implementing policies, technology, and street improvements to discourage unsafe behavior and improve safety for everyone in Broward. To learn more, visit safestreets4broward.org.

Sincerely,

James Cromar

Deputy Executive Director

Public Outreach Story Map

Have you visited the Route to 2050 website recently? If not, you are missing out on some exciting new information. One new item is our Survey (Public Outreach) Story Map, which tells the story of the engagement completed for the Route to 2050 Metropolitan Transportation Plan (MTP). Take a few minutes to review the story. You’ll see a summary of the survey responses, where we engaged with the community during the initial outreach phase, and how these efforts influenced the policy direction for the plan. We continue engaging the community on the Route to 2050 MTP and will seek additional opportunities this fall (September through November) to share the draft plan. If you are interested in a presentation, please email info@browardmpo.org or call us at 954-876-0033. We are still working on an interactive map to show the location and details of the projects included in the draft Cost Feasible Plan. Stay tuned to Mobility Monday and the MPO’s social media platforms for the announcement of its availability.
