| | The Broward MPO, in partnership with Broward County, received funding from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Safe Streets and Roads for All initiative to develop the Broward Regional Comprehensive Safety Action Plan (BSAP), a data-driven approach to address safety on deadly corridors. The goal of the BSAP is to reduce or eliminate death and serious injury crashes on our roadways. This does not mean that there will be no crashes but that the impact of the crashes will be less severe. Roadway safety is a concern across the country and around the world, and there are lessons we can learn from other places. We also must recognize local conditions that much of Broward County developed around the automobile. The roadway system in Broward County emphasizes the movement of vehicles. Traffic engineers design roads to be safe when people travel at the speed limit. Unfortunately, the average speed on many of our roadways exceeds the posted speed limits. There is also the question of how to determine the appropriate speed limit along the roadways. This comprehensive effort will consider the use of a variety of safety countermeasures to increase safety through speed management practices such as installing speed radar signs, installing state-of-the-art enforcement camera technology in school zones, and constructing street elements designed to manage speeds like raised crosswalks and roundabouts. You can take action today. Slow down and make it a safe trip. To learn more, visit safestreets4broward.org.
Sincerely,
James Cromar
