Traffic calming improves the quality of life in residential and commercial areas by reducing vehicle speeds or volume. Various traffic calming measures are used to balance transportation network efficiency with livability and safety for cyclists, pedestrians, and other vulnerable road users. These traffic calming measures fall into three main categories:
Horizontal Deflection hinders motorists’ ability to drive in a straight line by creating a horizontal shift in the roadway. The shift forces motorists to slow down to navigate the road comfortably. Types include:
- Lateral shift
- Chicane
- Realigned intersection
- Traffic circle
- Roundabout
Vertical Deflection changes the roadway’s height, forcing motorists to slow down to maintain comfort. Types include:
- Speed humps
- Speed cushions
- Speed table
- Raised crosswalks
- Raised intersections
Street Width Reduction narrows the width of a vehicle travel lane, encouraging motorists to slow down. The reduction can also shorten the distance a pedestrian has to walk to cross a street, reducing exposure conflict. Types include:
- Corner extension (curb extension, bulb out)
- Choker (midblock curb extension)
- Median island
- On-street parking
Routing Restrictions prevent vehicle movements at an intersection and are intended to eliminate portions of cut-through traffic. Types include:
- Diagonal diverter
- Full closure
- Half closure
