Happy Holidays from
Humane Society London & Middlesex
Greetings!

2020 has come to an end, and I think I can speak for most when I say this year was far and above anything any of us could have predicted. It was a year filled with great challenges and monumental change. It brought us together to lift our community and reminded us to slow down and appreciate our health. It also reminds me of how proud I am to be a part of this organization.

Humane Society London & Middlesex (HSLM) felt these challenges. As an essential service, our staff adapted our protocols and pivoted our adoption/surrender services to be by appointment only so we could continue providing the medical care, shelter and support to pets in need. While the world started to close their doors, our donor’s hearts remained open. Your generosity this year made the difference in the lives of all animals within the communities that HSLM serves.

It is because of you that we are able to continue our shelter operations. Our organization receives zero government funding. You are the driving force behind all that HSLM does.
Through your support we were able to complete 708 exams and 375 surgeries to help over 1,000 pets in need. We witnessed many great stories this year as 2020 brought some truly impactful animals into the HSLM family.

Milo captured the hearts of donors and staff with his tenacious spirit and goofball personality. Milo had to undergo an amputation on his front right leg after sustaining injury. He certainly received too many liver treats during his stay at HSLM and became a favourite of staff at the shelter. Milo found his home in 2020 and he is loving life with his new family enjoying endless hours of cuddles and love.

Milo was one of two amputation surgeries that were completed this year. Thanks to donors, HSLM treated seventeen animals for dental complications, completed five eye procedures, and 343 spay/neuter surgeries.
We also had our largest owner surrender in 2020. We supported a member of our community who was trying to provide care and shelter to a number of felines at one property and had become overwhelmed as the cats needs continued to grow. Through the hard work and dedication of staff and volunteers HSLM took in 88 cats on one single day.

We safely transported each animal, provided them with immediate vaccinations and prepared a safe and comfortable kennel for them to adjust to their temporary home. Our Animal Health team and volunteers have diligently worked with each cat to help socialize and prepare them for adoption.

Red and Eric were part of the 88 surrendered on October 20, and on November 12, 2020 they were ready to meet their adopters. Adopted together this bonded pair found hope and love this year with their new family. It has been a joy to watch the 88 become available for adoption and find their new homes.
HSLM went virtual in 2020 with events. In May we introduced the First Annual HSLM Calendar Photo Contest! This brand new contest invited submissions of all pets to become one of twelve HSLM Pet Celebrities! The top 12 vote-getters won a stylized photoshoot with Danielle Mahoney Photography and were featured in our 2021 HSLM Calendar. The donate to vote contest raised $25,000 for shelter pets in need! We are so excited to bring this contest back and find out who will compete for a spot in the 2022 Calendar.

It’s not to late to get your copy before the new year! Each purchase equals one vaccination for a shelter pet.

As we close this year, we look ahead to the future of HSLM. On December 3rd, 2020 we submitted our application for zoning change to the City of London for a new property in the east end. This application marks the first step in a New Home. New Hope for HSLM. We are hoping to move into the second phase of development in the first quarter of 2021 and we are excited to experience this journey with you!

On behalf of HSLM, I wish you health, happiness and a joyful Holiday Season. Best wishes as we head into a new year and thank you for your continued support.

Sincerely,
Steve Ryall, Executive Director
A Christmas Miracle
Miracle (five-year-old Great Dane) came to HSLM in distress in October. This poor mother had endured multiple litters and was severely emaciated when she was abandoned in our dog run after hours. Luckily an HSLM staff member spotted Miracle in the run that evening and quickly brought her inside. While we do not know Miracle’s full story we know that during her time with us she quickly came out of her shell and let her adorable self shine!

Her gentle nature and lovable personality is absolutely infectious. She often forgets her size when she meets a new friend! Miracle has had a tough start to her life but we are excited to watch her find her new family and begin a life filled with love. Miracle is now available for adoption and is waiting to meet you!

Interested adopters must complete online adoption application - www.hslm.ca/adopt HSLM receives multiple applications for each adoptable pet and reviews applications based on time receive and eligibility requirements.
Help HSLM win $10,000
it’s as easy as one click!

In celebration of Ironstone’s 10th year of building homes they are giving away $10,000 each week to an organization that makes an impact in the City of London. The organization with the most votes by December 21, 2020 will be gifted $10,000 to help support their mission.

$10,000 would pay for 80 spay/neuter surgeries for a shelter pet at HSLM. Helping to curb pet homelessness and overpopulation, this gift would contribute to the care and protection of animals in need this Holiday Season.
