Here's the Little Tree with Tiny Socks for the 2023 holidays. The newest sock, that orange-heel-red-toe one, uses the helical knitting technique found in our Striped Helical Beanie Hat pattern for the fine stripes.
Over the years I have gravitated toward knitting these little socks out of Crazy Zauberball. I wind and rewind until I get color that zings for a tiny toe or a heel. I like the variation in color that I get from one color way OR I mix the colors by using one for heels and toes, another for the leg and foot.
In the spirit of Elizabeth Zimmermann (who wrote very brief suggestions instead of detailed directions), here’s how to knit tiny socks.
🌲 Cast on 36 stitches on three needles.
Try small DPN needles like US #1 or 2, or 2.75 mm.
🌲 Join and knit a cuff for an inch or so.
Use knit 1, purl 1 OR knit 2, purl 2.
🌲 Knit the leg as long as you want it.
Usually 2-3 inches.
🌲 Set aside stitches for the instep.
Usually 18 stitches.
🌲 Knit a heel flap on remaining 18 stitches.
🌲 Turn the heel, pick up along the heel flap, and decrease for the gussets, getting back to the original number of stitches.
🌲 Bring the instep stitches back on the needles.
🌲 Knit the foot as long as you want it.
Usually 1-2 inches.
🌲 Knit a toe.
It's okay to gather the toe stitches instead of grafting.
🌲 Weave in the ends and enjoy your tiny sock!
