| | The grass is greener in Plantation! This year was the 40th year we’ve earned the Tree City USA designation by the Arbor Day Foundation. Even with population and business growth, our City remains a lush, green community. For Plantation, one of the methods to managing redevelopment opportunities and challenges is focusing on improved mobility as well as safety for all roadway users. Designated as our own downtown area in 1999, the vision of Midtown Plantation is becoming a reality, allowing residents to live, work, and play all in our City. But with that growth as well as the growth of our neighboring cities, naturally comes with a price – i.e. increased traffic. Like many of the suburban cities in Broward, Plantation grew up as a single-family home community. We recognize the importance that transportation has on improving the quality of life for our residents and balancing their concerns about new development. Starting in August 2021, City staff worked directly with Broward MPO City Services to develop Plantation’s first Multimodal Master Transportation Plan (MMTP). Over the next two years, the MMTP identified program-ready projects intended to improve roadway safety, reduce speeding and cut-through traffic on neighborhood roads, create a cohesive bike network, and provide multimodal transportation options to access Midtown Plantation.
The MMTP identified improvements for nine roads, from neighborhood streets to regional roadways, and spanning from the western to the eastern neighborhoods. The City is now focusing on implementation of these improvements. Some of the projects may be implemented through our Capital Improvement Program, such as speed tables and filling in sidewalk gaps. While other projects, such as the Cleary Blvd. roadway reconfiguration, will likely require funding assistance from our partners. With the MMTP’s data-driven recommendations that addressed feedback from frequent public engagement, and documented coordination with partners such as Broward County and FDOT, we know we are in a strong position for the MMTP’s projects to come to fruition. We look forward to ongoing collaboration with the Broward MPO on implementation of the MMTP as well as implementation of other transportation improvements impacting our community and continuing to improve our residents' quality of life.
Sincerely,
Tim Fadgen
