Congressman Reed to Address ABC Members
Please join us on March 16, 2021 from 8:30 – 9:30 a.m. for our first Quarterly Membership Update of the year. The staff and Board will highlight some of the great work the Chapter has accomplished on behalf of the membership in the following areas:

  • Education
  • Membership
  • Government Affairs

We’ll be joined by our special guest speaker, Rep. Tom Reed (R- District 23 - Corning/Elmira), co-chair of the influential Problem Solvers Caucus. The caucus is a group of 24 Republicans and 24 Democrats who meet weekly to solve some of the most contentious issues facing our country today.
Rep. Reed will share with us the latest update from our nation's capital and what we, as the merit shop industry, can anticipate for this legislative session.

More on Rep. Reed:

  • Rep. Reed has been in office since 2010 and has been a firm believer in and supporter of the merit shop philosophy in the construction industry;
  • He currently serves on the vital Ways & Means Committee and the Social Security subcommittee; and
  • Before joining Congress, he served as the Mayor of Corning, New York for one term (two years).

Government Affairs
Call to Action: Support The Fair and Open Competition Act
The Fair and Open Competition Act has been reintroduced in Congress. This legislation protects federal and federally assisted construction contracts from government-mandated project labor agreements and will allow merit shop contractors to have a fair chance at competing to rebuild America.

After the bill was introduced, an ABC-led coalition of 17 construction industry and business associations sent a letter to congress in support of the bill, urging them to immediately pass this common-sense legislation.

ABC Chapters and members can take action to urge their representatives to sign on as a cosponsor by clicking the button below:

Chapter Updates
New Faces All Around
Welcome Santino R. Thomas
Director of Communications & Marketing
As we continue to position the Chapter to provide the best services to our membership, I’m pleased to announce the hiring of Santino R. Thomas as our new Director of Communications & Marketing. We’re excited for him to join our team!

We had been without a full-time Marketing and Communications professional for close to a year now. Two members of our team, Stephanie and Tanner, did an exceptional job filling in where they could in these roles, in addition to their other responsibilities.

Having not had a full-time team member in this capacity, combined with Stephanie moving on from ABC, the Chapter decided it was time for a new hire, in line with our commitment to providing our membership with quality services.

For the last six years he served as Chief of Staff & Director of Communications for Assemblyman Brian Miller and directed the communications and public relations for more than ten members of the New York State Assembly. He focused primarily on developing communications and public relations strategies for the Assembly members and supporting those plans with media outreach, content creation for social media platforms, and copywriting for websites.

During his tenure in the Legislature, he worked on legislation beneficial to the construction industry, working to break the stigma of jobs in the trades; and promoting craft training programs and the return of trades training to our schools.

Santino started out in the sports and entertainment industry. He has worked with multiple NCAA athletics departments including his Alma Mater, SUNY Cortland, and Division I Siena College. He has also worked with several professional sports franchises including both the New York Yankees’ and Mets’ organizations.

Santino will be working closely with the staff to improve and enhance our internal and external communications, promote the merit shop industry across multiple media platforms, and support the Government Affairs team fighting negative legislation. He will also curate the overall messaging for ABC’s Empire State Chapter and serve as a spokesperson for the chapter.

Please help us welcome Santino! Feel free to reach out to him for anything you may need.

Women In Construction Week 2021
Celebrating Women in Construction
At ABC Empire State Chapter, we are committed to recruiting and training women in all trades areas so we can continue to develop a diverse and inclusive construction industry.

A recent study shows working women are experiencing the worst effects of the recession because the industries they tend to work in are harder hit by the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. Five million women have lost or left their jobs in the past year. In December 2020 alone, the U.S. economy lost 140,000 jobs—all of them previously held by women.

There is no better time for women to consider a career in construction, where workforce shortages are a constant concern and new talent is in demand to rebuild our economy and crumbling infrastructure.

In that light and in honor of WIC Week 2021, we have been recognizing many of ABC Empire State's women in the construction industry:
Erin Sperry - SperryCo, LLC
President & Owner

Erin Sperry is the President and Owner of SperryCo, LLC, a heavy/highway and commercial contractor specializing in geotechnical construction - deep foundations and support of excavation systems. Amber A. French - RADEC Electric
Journeyman Electrician

Amber began her journey as an electrician in 2013. As a single mother of three boys, at the time, she knew that she needed a solid way to provide for her children while teaching them the value of hard work.

She started out by attending an electrical trade class at OACES in the city of Rochester, NY. Upon completion, she was offered a position as a helper at RADEC Electric. After nine months working in that role, she was offered an opportunity to participate in the apprenticeship program. She has since completed the apprenticeship program and is now a journeyman electrician.

Amber resides in Hamlin, NY with her new husband and their five sons. Together they are teaching their boys the value of hard work and perseverance and that a little dream can go a long way!
Lisa Clark Patriquin - P & W Electric
Vice President of Operations

Lisa has more than 25 years of experience with P&W Electric with a background in a variety of disciplines within the electrical contracting field. She has worked in areas from project management to administrative services, including payroll, estimating, and human resources.

Lisa is also responsible for the implementation of the New York State Apprenticeship Training Program for P&W Electric and she serves as a member of one of the Empire State Chapter’s Regional Leadership Committees.
