From TMJ4: Army veteran and student at UW-Parkside finds purpose in helping others
|
By: Mary Jo Ola, TMJ4
KENOSHA, Wis. — Jennifer Staton grew up in Racine and knew early on that she was drawn to joining the United States Army.
"I mean 9/11 happened when I was in eighth grade, that had an impact on me," Staton recalled. "In my heart, I knew I wanted to do something that meant something."
Staton, whose maiden name is Lopez, was 19 years old when she left for basic training.
Her first stop was upstate New York where she began her journey to becoming a combat medic.
"I was a field medic, so I enjoy the camaraderie. I'm a team player," Staton said.

This army veteran's eight years of service included stops in Iraq and Afghanistan.

UW-Parkside to Host Wisconsin Veterans Museum Banner Exhibit
|
The University of Wisconsin-Parkside's Military & Veteran Success Center presents will host "Working Warriors - Military Life Beyond Combat" a banner exhibit from Nov. 9 through Nov. 15. The exhibit is on loan from the Wisconsin Veterans Museum and was made possible by the Wisconsin Humanities Council.
The exhibit is a photo commemoration of the many service and support roles in the military. Many stories are told of heroic and notable combat missions. More unknown, but highly critical, are the 75% of military roles traditionally considered "non-combat". The banners showcase the distinguished history of those who served to support the efforts of the front lines.

The exhibit will open on Thursday, Nov. 9 with a reception from 4:30-6 p.m. in Wyllie Hall Upper Main Place. Both the reception and exhibit are free and open to the community.

Additionally, 88% of Parkside seniors work an average of 21 hours per week and 64% of first-year students work an average of 13 hours per week. CARS also serves as a resource for implementing best practices for teaching and supporting nontraditional students.

Administrative Transformation Program (ATP) Updates
|
Workday Go-Live Revised to 2025
On October 6, 2023, the University of Wisconsin System Board of Regents approved a revised timeline for the Administrative Transformation Program Workday implementation. Go-live is now scheduled for July 2025, revised from July 2024. End-user training will begin in March 2025.
The revision will provide adequate time to prepare for a successful implementation. We will continue to partner with ATP as we get ready for the transition to Workday.
ATP will standardize finance, human resources, and research administration processes, such as payroll and expense reporting, across the UW System. To learn more about Workday and subscribe to the ATP Touchpoints newsletter, visit the ATP website.
| |
What Is ATP?
The Administrative Transformation Program (ATP) is on a mission to rebuild finance, human resources, and research administration systems at every institution within the University of Wisconsin System. The goal is to reduce the complexity of the current administrative environment and refocus valuable staff time on UW’s mission of education, research, and outreach.
To make this vision a reality, we’re working with people across the UW to standardize processes and implement new, best-in-class technology to support these essential functions.
Technology
To standardize business processes and integrate our systems, ATP will implement Workday and Huron Research Suite to replace HRS, SFS, and hundreds of ancillary systems across the UW.
People
ATP's success depends on knowledgeable staff who apply their time, talent, and expertise — both on and off the program team.
Process
Our business process redesign work is based on a tiered governance structure and tested methodology that includes faculty and staff from across the UW System.
Workday Walkthroughs
ATP will conduct monthly Workday Walkthroughs on a variety of topics. Recordings are available to anyone with a UW login. This walkthrough provides an overview of how to set up funding as a standalone process in Workday. Learn more about this walkthrough on the ATP website Watch How to Fund Positions in Workday.
Attend the next ATP Workday Walkthrough: How Workday Streamlines Performance Management
The November Workday Walkthrough will showcase how employees, managers, and HR personnel will navigate and participate in the performance review process. You will also learn how you can share education, certifications, awards, and additional talent information in your Career Profile.
Who should attend: HR personnel who track performance and employees who receive or conduct performance reviews
November 9, 3-4 p.m. The recording of the walkthrough will be available to anyone with a UW login.

EV Charging is Coming to UW-Parkside!
|
Why is UW-Parkside installing electric vehicle charging stations?
UW-Parkside is committed to being a leader in the community by showcasing emerging technologies. The number of electric vehicles present on campus has increased each year for both commuter and residential students. There are currently no on-campus options for residential students to charge their vehicles. For off-campus students and staff who rent, charging access can present a barrier to entry if the property manager does not install on-property charging options. Providing this convenient amenity will help meet the needs of students, staff, and guests to our campus and improve their experience. Station usage data can also be worked into curriculum, providing students with real-world understanding of how these technologies work.
When will the stations be up and operating?
The stations are planned to be operational in fall of 2023. Stay tuned - we will host an opening event to allow staff and students to check out the new installation and practice using the chargers!

UW-Parkside Inclement Weather Policy
|
This is a reminder of UW-Parkside policies in the event of inclement weather and weather emergencies.

This policy extends the application of UW System Administrative Policy 1235 to the UW-Parkside campus. It draws important distinctions between the university remaining open, which classes will be canceled, and closing the university. During a weather emergency, a decision may be made to:
- Keep the university open.
- Keep the university open, cancel in-person classes on campus, but allow hybrid, asynchronous, and synchronous online classes to be offered.
- Close the university.
