When my kids were little, we told them we didn’t have VCRs when we were their age. They then said, “How did you watch your videos?” When we said, “Well, there weren’t any videos to watch,” they looked at us in horror. It never occurred to them that there was a time without videos.
Things in the office have changed as well. When I started working, fax machines were a big deal. People gathered around the coffee machine, the copier, and the water cooler and caught up with each other.
For good or bad, technology has changed and has allowed more flexibility in our work, but also distanced many of us. Camaraderie in the workplace is tricky, and we, as a working community, have lost touch with each other a bit.
As business owners and managers, we need to find ways to connect with our people that don’t impede our abilities to get our jobs done.
