Waterman: Duke Ambassador of Aloha Film Screening
The American Indian Resource Center (AIRC) and the Asian American/Pacific Islander Resource Center (AA/PIRC) are hosting a film screening of “Waterman- Duke: Ambassador of Hawaii” with dinner, dessert and refreshments.
Thursday, February 2nd
5:30-7:30pm in the Cervantes & Velasquez Conference Room on the 3rd Floor of the Bay Tree Building
Throughout this event, we aim to highlight the shared experiences of our communities and to learn about Duke Paoa Kahanamoku, who is known to have popularized surfing. The Duke was also best friends with Jim Thorpe, of Sac and Fox nation, one of the most famous Native athletes. Their friendship models how our communities can build relationship with one another, and support each other. The town of Santa Cruz is also argued to be one of the first places that surfing was popularized so we hope to highlight the unique history of the town we all reside in.

Combining music and comedy, JR serenades the audience into laughter with songs, jokes, and stories of traveling the world, life after college, and family.
Jackie Keliiaa is a stand-up comedian, writer, and actor based in Oakland, California. You can find her in the 2021 release, We Had a Little Real Estate Problem: The Unheralded Story of Native Americans & Comedy. Jackie has been featured on Comedy Central, Team Coco, and Illuminative’s 25 Native American Comedians to Follow. The Roots of Traditional Foods and Cultural Practices: Connecting to the Land for Health and Wellness, is a one year grant under the auspices of the Office for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (ODEI) and the Intersectionality Laboratory. The program is student centered and will be guided by the needs and experiences of students of color, especially Black, Indigenous, immigrant, and undocumented students, to identify and create outdoor environments to establish campus and community spaces welcoming and nurturing to student communities who have been historically marginalized within higher education. Central to the grant are indigenous epistemologies and pedagogy which will provide students with tools for health and wellness in their personal lives and as developing scholars.
Internship Expectations: The internship appointment is from mid winter quarter 2023 to September 15, 2023. Interns will generally work 10 to 15 hours per week depending on position and on activities or events planned. Work will be conducted in-person as well as remotely. Interns will be compensated through a departmental award disbursed quarterly.
Application Process: Interns should complete and submit an application by Friday, 2/3/23 at 5pm. All applications will be reviewed and the program managers will notify those selected for an interview by the following week.

AA/PIRC Statement on the Recent Violence Affecting Our Communities
|
Dear UC Santa Cruz Community,
On behalf of the Asian American and Pacific Islander Resource Center (AA/PIRC), we want to express our sadness in response to recent violent events that have impacted our communities. Early this week, tragedy struck communities both in California (Monterey Park & Half Moon Bay), and in Indiana. What should have been a joyous time of new beginnings with the Lunar New Year, is now burdened with tragedy. Regardless of the motivation behind these violent acts, our communities are left with loss, sadness, fear, and anger.
We recognize that our campus community is also impacted by these events, as we may see ourselves or our loved ones reflected in the victims, or the locations may be home to some in our campus community.
For additional resources, you can visit :
Please don’t hesitate to reach out at any of our channels (aapirc@ucsc.edu, iG:@aapirc_ucsc) for any additional support you may need in these times.
In Community,
Caz Salamanca (He/Him/His)
Director, Asian American/Pacific Islander Resource Center (AA/PIRC)
