Important Information for Bexley Graduates

Congratulations on your graduation! Below is information on the name pronunciation hotline and ceremony tickets for both the traditional undergraduate ceremony on Saturday, May 11, and the Bexley graduate ceremony on Wednesday May 8.

Name Pronunciation Hotline

The orator will read your name from a card that you hand them onstage. If you think there is any chance at all your name might be mispronounced at graduation, please call the pronunciation hotline at 614-236-6999 by 8 a.m. on Friday, May 3, and annunciate your full name as you wish to hear it read. Please do so slowly and clearly, more than once, but naturally enough for the name reader to hear it the way it really sounds. We cannot stress the importance of doing this if you want to hear your name called correctly. Also, include the graduation session you will be attending (i.e. traditional undergraduate ceremony or graduate ceremony).

Tickets

Each graduate will receive e-tickets for their guests. Please see the Commencement webpage for your ceremony (undergraduate or graduate) on the number of tickets you will receive. If you would like to be considered for additional tickets, please fill out the request form on the Commencement webpage. Additional tickets are not guaranteed. 



All sessions will be live streamed from Capital's YouTube channel. Only graduates who have registered to attend through the Registrar’s Office may order tickets, which means you have APPLIED for graduation and are clearing. Any duplicate requests will be deleted. Tickets will be available through May 3, but please do not wait.

If you missed the online order deadline for your graduation caps and gowns, no worries, we have you covered! Stop by the Bookstore in the Student Union on the Bexley campus and pick up everything you need.

If you’ve already ordered regalia, pick-up will take place at the Bookstore from Tuesday, April 30, through Friday, May 3, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Light refreshment will be available.

Summer Class Registration Open

Registration is now open for summer 2024 classes, and we invite you to consider the benefits of taking classes in the summer. In addition to in-person classes, this year we have a greater selection of online courses available, which provide you with the option to take classes from wherever you are. In addition to options in learning format, summer class offer:

• Lower tuition. Summer tuition is substantially discounted, which represents a great savings to you!
• Opportunities to get ahead, catch up on credit hours, repeat a class, or explore a new area of interest.
• Grades earned in summer classes count toward your Capital GPA, while grades earned at other institutions do not. Focus on one or two classes to improve your GPA, improve your academic standing, or meet financial aid requirements.
• An expanded list of online (synchronous and asynchronous) classes are available, especially Signature Learning UC classes.
• For students who wish to take in-person math, science, and other courses on campus, you will experience a smaller class size, one-on-one support from faculty, and have access to Academic Success resources.
• Courses are offered in 8-week and 16-week formats. 

Summer semester begins on May 13. Summer II begins on July 1. For students interested in in-person science and math courses offered through the Summer Institute for Science and Math, sessions begin on May 20 and June 18.

Sexual Assault Education and Prevention.” This annual exhibit features narratives and re-creations of outfits based on experiences answering this frequently asked question of survivors. This event occurs yearly during Sexual Assault Awareness Month. Please join us to unlearn one of our culture's most prevalent rape myths. 

Annual Title IX Survey

Each year, Capital University participates in the Ohio Department of Higher Education’s Changing Campus Culture initiative, including a survey to gauge student experiences on campus. All students, faculty and staff should have received a survey email within the last few days.



The survey will take approximately 10 minutes to complete.

Summer Hours

The end of a challenging yet successful academic year is fast approaching. Capital University recognizes that employees appreciate the opportunity to work an adjusted schedule in the summer. Therefore, we will once again adjust our office hours for the summer to 9 a.m. through 4 p.m. daily. All employees will still be paid for their full work day. For clarity, this means any vacation days taken during this time also equate to a normal full work day. 

Summer hours will be in effect as follows: 

Bexley Campus: Monday, May 13, through Friday, Aug. 9

Trinity and the Law School: Monday, May 20, through Friday, Aug. 9

Scheduling needs may vary by department to continue to meet the various needs across the university during the summer. A consistent level of campus safety, service to our students, and functionality of campus facilities must be maintained, so supervisors should coordinate staff scheduling with the appropriate vice president to ensure their constituencies are well served.

Student Employment Spring to Summer Transition

ALL student employment positions will be terminated after the end of the spring semester on May 19. The last biweekly pay period for students is May 6 through May 19, paid on Friday, May 24.

New hire requests will need to be completed for summer jobs. Summer student positions begin on or after May 20.

Also, if you have any semester-end stipends for students, please submit your student payroll payment requests with appropriate signatures to Steve Szczepaniak at sszczepaniak@capital.edu before the end of the corresponding pay period.

April Novotny, Capital’s vice president of University Advancement and Chief Development officer, received the Mike Ziemianski Distinguished Service Award at the CASE conference in Chicago on April. The annual award, the highest that can be achieved in the district, recognizes advancement professionals who have given outstanding service to District V for at least five years. “April has a long history with volunteer leadership to District, having most recently served as past-chair and a former conference chair,” said Jeri Pat Gabbert, CASE Award Committee member. “Her leadership during Covid and the transition to OneCASE has been vital to our district. Her nomination stood out to the selection committee as she has provided outstanding leadership service to CASE for many, many years, and we were thrilled to be able to celebrate her with this award.”

The Chimes staff received the top award for Division B University Newspapers at the Ohio News Media Association during its Columbus convention April 4. The Frank E. Deaner Award for Excellence in Collegiate Journalism is conferred upon a publication that has the most wins in 10 categories of competition.

“The staff this year has taken their journalism training seriously,” Kelly Messinger, adviser, said. “They know the standards of good journalism and are practicing it. I am so pleased.”

In addition to overall excellence, the Chimes had first places in overall print design, website, headline writing and opinion writing, and received second places for in-depth reporting and overall news coverage.

Charlie Rinehart, first year, took the headline honors for “Whose AI generated line is it anyway?”

Marvin Wurr, junior, received the opinion writing award for a variety of columns about cell phones, the Roman Empire, and pepperoni.

Adrian Suppes, editor-in-chief who received a second place for in-depth reporting of university finances, said, “What this staff has been able to accomplish this year is amazing. Their hard work and dedication have been incredible and deserving of this great recognition. I am so honored to be a part of and lead this group.”

Campus Parking on Saturday

Heavy event traffic is expected on campus this Saturday, April 20, when more than 470 people will be on campus for the Ohio History Connection’s 2024 Ohio History Day. Heavy traffic is expected, particularly around the Pleasant Ridge parking lots. Parking will be prohibited on Pleasant Ridge Avenue between Main Street and East Mound Street. Parking lots S1, S2, and S3 will be used by this group, but S7 could also be impacted. If you are going to be on campus that day, please park in lots on the west side of campus.
