BCBAA Elects New Vice President and Secretary

Scholarship Fund Established to Honor Crystal Welch '04


A new fund has been established in honor of Crystal Welch ’04, a founding member of the Bowdoin College Black Alumni Association (BCBAA) who was vice president until her death in May 2024.

Evan Gershkovich '14 Convicted by Russian Court in Case Denounced by US as a Sham, Possibly Setting the Stage for Prisoner Swap


In a case that the US government and The Wall Street Journal have denounced as a sham, Evan Gershkovich '14, the first American journalist to be arrested on espionage charges in Russia since the Cold War, was found guilty of spying by a Russian court on July 19 and sentenced to sixteen years in prison following a secret, three-day trial.

Why Studying the Humanities Is Essential for Designing Artificial Intelligence Systems


Four faculty from various disciplines have collaborated to teach a class that takes a deep dive into the world of artificial intelligence (AI) and the role that ethics plays as this emerging technology transforms nearly every aspect of our lives. It was partially funded by a grant from the National Humanities Center. In the second of a three-part series, we look at why Bowdoin faculty are committed to teaching literature, languages, the arts, history, philosophy, and religion—and how students benefit.

Scholarly Summer: Academic Fellows Dig into Focused Research

Each summer, hundreds of students receive grants to work on independent, faculty-mentored research, many of which evolve into yearlong honors theses. This year, nearly 230 students were given these opportunities through the Office of Student Fellowships and Research or an academic department. They're using this time to investigate a topic of their choice within disciplines across the curriculum—the humanities, social sciences, and physical sciences.

Six Students Think Globally and Act Locally



This summer, Bowdoin's six 2024 Global Citizens Fellows are living in Thailand, Honduras, Peru, Nepal, Costa Rica, and Namibia. They are all working with local nonprofits, engaged in on-the-ground work to support communities.

Grand’Pierre Makes Olympic Appearance in Paris


Rising Bowdoin senior Alex Grand’Pierre represented Haiti at the 2024 Paris Olympics last weekend, competing in the 200-meter breaststroke. Grand’Pierre is the third member of his family to compete in the Olympic Games (including sister Emilie 23), and carries on the century-old tradition of Polar Bear Olympians.

Leroy Greason Professor of English, bring great American writers and the books they wrote back from the dead.
